From the CEO
Those who travel through Darwin regularly will be familiar with flights at all hours of the night, and the strange hunger pains that can go along with them. That’s why we’re very excited to have Dôme now open; it operates 24 hours so you can grab a coffee or a meal no matter when you’re passing through. Our retail upgrades also continued in Alice Springs with the opening of our revamped Australian Way, which was accompanied by a book signing with local author Edna Saunders—you can purchase her book A Rock to Remember in store.
Works on Darwin’s terminal expansion are continuing, with tiling currently underway in the domestic departure lounge before the new furniture is installed. For more, read our June update. Enjoy the latest issue of Touchdown.

Alice Solar Expansion
The $1.9 million expanded Solar Power Station at Alice Springs Airport (ASA) is now open, and the extra 996 panels have doubled the airport’s capacity to produce its own power. The new 325kw photovoltaic (PV) system was constructed on top of steel structures that house the solar panels and provide shaded, premium car parking.
ASA currently receives approximately a quarter of its power needs from its existing 235kW power station, which was completed in 2010. The additional panels will offset the equivalent of 420 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Scientists in Schools
DIA recently hosted all of O’Loughlin Catholic College’s Year 7 students who investigated the flora and fauna found at the airport as part of CSIRO’s national Scientists in Schools program. Over two days, the team from EcOz Environmental Services including ecologists, an ornithologist (birds), an entomologist (insects), herpetologists (reptiles and amphibians) and an ichthyologist (fish) took the budding scientists through seven stations across two ecosystems found along the Gurambai trail.
To establish the stations, EcOz scientists undertook nocturnal searches and set overnight traps to give students the chance to come face to face with a variety of snake, frog, fish, lizard and bird species.

Refuel at Dome
Passengers travelling through Darwin International Airport (DIA) will now be able to relax with a coffee at any time of the day or night, after Dôme Cafe opened its doors in May. Located upstairs in the departure lounge, Dôme is the fourth store to open as part of the Terminal Expansion Project’s retail upgrades. Featuring floor-to-ceiling airside views, the restaurant seats 170 and is open 24 hours a day.
Fixtures in Western Australia, where Dôme was founded in 1993, the cafes’ signature domed ceilings and leather armchairs are new to the Territory.

Aid for Typhoon victims
The people of the Philippines are still feeling the effects of Typhoon Haiyan, which swept through the central region in November 2013. DIA was proud to support Darwin’s Filipino community and the Philippine Consulate General in their efforts to send across 35 boxes of food and clothes to aid victims in their recovery.
Working with Darwin City Council and Moil Primary School, volunteers collected donations and packed boxes ready for their journey to rural areas such as Negros Occidental, Roxas City and Leyte. Once they arrived, teachers and parents at local schools organised the distribution of clothes and food to local students and their families. DIA donated $5,000 to cover the freight costs for the trip. Read more... |

June update
The new restaurant Dôme has started trading during what is a busy period in the departures lounge, with re-tiling of the area currently underway. Once the tiling is complete, new furniture will be installed. Further retail upgrades to come include a revamped Australian Way store and new JR Duty Free outlets. Read more... |

Footy flyers
NT Airports was proud to support the Ntaria School AFL squad for its recent trip to Darwin, supplying boots, socks, hats and other essentials. Pictured here with ASA General Manager Dave Batic, the boys were representing Central Australia in the School Sport NT AFL Competition and excited about their first ever flight.

Walk the Creek
Last month DIA hosted guided walks of its Gurambai Trail and Rapid Creek reserve, which were established in 2005. DIA shared information on how the reserve is managed and the work that is ongoing in the area, and heard from residents about what the creek means to them.
