LBUSD Board Approves LCAP with only $100,000 for Restorative, $2.4 million for police and Campus Security

After several months of engagement, countless meetings and rallies, the message was clear: students want alternatives to punitive and exclusionary discipline practices. Most notably alternatives like Restorative Justice.

The ESM campaign advocated for several recommendations to be included in the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) that would focus specifically on funding LBUSD's Resolution on School Discipline Principles and Practices, which the SChool Board approved on October 8, 2013.

However, going in to the final vote yesterday all of this seemed in vain as the LBUSD school board unanimously approved a LCAP that targeted more dollars  to the types of discipline practices that students and data say do more harm than good.

We're so proud of the work that all of the youth and community allies have put into this campaign and are looking forward to supporting the next steps to improve school discipline policies at LBUSD for all students!

Honoring Non-Traditional Dads on Father's Day

By VoiceWaves Reporter Thomas Lick

Father’s Day is a time for celebrating our fathers; the men that have devoted their lives to giving us the best shot at a happy and healthy life of our own. While every day should be an opportunity to honor our fathers, this occasion is a nice reminder that we shouldn’t take our dads for granted.

At VoiceWaves, we wanted to commemorate Fathers Day by celebrating three non-traditional fathers in Long Beach.

Food Systems and Land-Use

The Neighborhoods Workgroup at the California Endowment is pleased to invite you to:

Food Systems and Land Use
Tuesday, June 24th, 2014
9:00am - 12:00pm

A movement to create a more equitable, sustainable and healthy food system is sweeping the nation, and some of the most innovative strategies are emerging in California. Our food system impacts not only our individual health, but the economic vitality of our neighborhoods. It can impact land use, and both the natural and built environments of our neighborhoods.

The food system can be a platform to engage community residents in policy advocacy, and to galvanize their political power. An equitable food system could connect us to our culture and traditions, provide living wages and working conditions, small business opportunities and much more. The efforts of urban agriculture activists and advocates in the Sacramento region will be highlighted.

Speakers
Chanowk Yisrael, Yisrael Family Farms
Shawn Harrison, Soil Born Farms
Charles Mason, Ubuntu Green

The field of HIA and the process of getting health into decision-making continues to evolve and growhttp://www.healthimpactproject.org/hia/us

How will you and your team enhance skill sets, leverage big data, meaningfully engage communities, and have collective impact? HIA is one of many tools that may be considered for health-protective policy and action.

Be part of over 300 women moving policy in California!

The Women’s Foundation of California is now accepting applications for the 2014–2015 Women’s Policy Institute (WPI) Fellowship. Applications are due no later than Friday, July 18, by 5 PM PST.

About the Women's Policy Institute
Now in its 12th year, the Women’s Foundation of California’s statewide Women’s Policy Institute (WPI) attracts and engages a diverse group of community-based women leaders who want to build their skills to influence public policymaking at the state level. The Institute amplifies the voices of women who are engaged in grassroots social justice work, training them on how legislation is made, broadening their networks across social justice movements and connecting them to policymakers.

Each year this nonpartisan Institute offers an environment where up to 25 women leaders can leverage their expertise about their community needs and apply their new skills, networks and knowledge to influence policy and budget solutions that will positively impact women and families in California. Since the program’s inception in 2003, over 300 Institute fellows have been trained to make lasting policy changes for their communities. Fellows have contributed to advocacy efforts of 57 policy projects and 26 bills—20 of which became California law.
