Making Public Land Work

Challenging times, new opportunities

Reduced public spending alongside increased demand for statutory services presents a challenge for local authorities who want to maintain effective, high quality management of their land and natural assets.

Shared Assets' work is about creating solutions to this challenge

We partner with local authorities and community enterprises to transform parks, canals, woodlands and open space into productive assets that can help meet wider social and economic objectives at reduced cost.

What We've Been Up To…

In the Guardian: Case Studies in Localism

Our article for the The Guardian's 'Local Leaders Network', generated debate around the challenges local authorities face in managing green space. It used case studies to demonstrate the possibilities of community-council land partnerships.

Elvaston Park: Heritage for the 21st Century.

We are working with the National Trust and Derbyshire County Council, helping to shape the future management of Elvaston Castle and County Park

Strategies for Green Space Management

We are excited to be working with Locality and local community practitioners to help Kirklees Council review elements of their green space management. This work is part of the 'Delivering Differently'  programme funded by DCLG and the Cabinet Office.

Community management: getting it right

Getting The Benefits

Community-council partnerships can unlock the potential of landholdings, drawing new income to a site and delivering economic, environmental and social benefits that are tailored to the local neighbourhood.

Avoiding The Pitfalls

There are legitimate concerns around the viability of community land management. We work to ensure robust governance, and to build strong partnerships that can deliver effective and sustainable management. Read our tips.

Sharing Evidence

Our practical support is based on good evidence. Recent research has focused on the management of local authority woodlands, the current position of woodland social enterprise in England, Scotland and Wales, and understanding how social organisations can scale up their innovations successfully.
