How Are You Celebrating National Farmers Market Week?

 
USDA Secretary, Thomas Vilsack, has proclaimed this coming week of August 3-9 National Farmers Market Week. This week highlights the growing role of markets across the nation. How is your market showcasing this bountiful time of year?

Will it be with a chef demo? Recipe cards? A market tour for local officials? Click here for more ideas. Even if you don't hold an event, you might get some much deserved publicity by sending a press release to local media telling them about farmers' market week. Just keep in mind these media tips from the WA Farmers' Market Association.

Safe Summer Sampling

Keep shoppers safe by ensuring that vendors selling or sampling cut melons, tomatoes, unpasteurized juices, and other foods that must be cooled have:
  • cooling equipment with an ambient air thermometer
  • metal probe thermometers
  • sanitizer to clean thermometers
  • and a handwashing station and toothpicks or other way to keep hands off of samples.
