Summer 2014
Summer is getting hot here in Naples and we've been busy creating new pottery and attending some local events. We participated in this years CollierHarvest.org Food Drive and it was a great success.
Collier Harvest is a chapter of USA Harvest operating in Collier County, Florida. Their function is to recover excess or sale-dated food from area supermarkets, fruit stands and restaurants and deliver it to local agencies that use it to feed the hungry. Recently I read a great article from Archaeology.org. Have you heard about a well-aged vintage discovery? Archaeologists discovered a 3700-year-old wine cellar. Archaeologists working at the site of a massive palace in northern Israel have uncovered the oldest and largest wine cellar ever found in the region, providing not only evidence of the beverage, but also of the role it may have played at one of the area's most important sites more than three millennia ago.
Last summer, as Cline's team excavated the sprawling building in Tel Kabri, they were surprised by a small storeroom just off the main banquet hall. The 15-by-25-foot room was packed with at least 40 ceramic jars, each one measuring three feet tall. It soon became clear that the team had found the palace's wine cellar. They determined that the wine cellar contained the equivalent of an astonishing 3,000 modern-day bottles of wine. Additional analysis found presence of honey, mint, juniper berries, and tree resins, suggesting that the Canaanites added other ingredients to create a unique flavored wine concoction. The project leaders have indicated their intentions to re-create the ancient recipe.
