In the News
145 years ago, the first transcontinental railway was completed with ceremony and celebration. But none of the 12,000 Chinese laborers were recognized for their role in the undertaking. This year on the 145th Anniversary, President Obama paid tribute to the Chinese railway works in a proclamation. "This month marks 145 years since the final spike was hammered into the intercontinental railroad, an achievement made possible by Chinese laborers, who did the majority of this backbreaking and dangerous work." Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez also inducted the Chinese railroad workers into the Labor Hall of Honor. Watch the induction on You Tube.
