Greetings <<First Name>>,
You’ve decided a coach is what you need for your business or for your own goals. But, where do you start? How will you go about finding the right one? How can you tell if the coach is the right “fit” for you and your business?
Let me act as your business coach for a moment and share with you five things you need to know before employing a coach.
Hiring a coach to help you reach your professional or business objectives is an important step and you should take the time to find the right match. Before you can start you first must be clear about what you want to accomplish. It’s about knowing your own values and where you wish to focus and being clear about what is important to you.
Obtain names from people you trust, and interview at least three candidates. Search online. One source is, the International
Coach Federation, which provides coach referral service. Look for
these qualifications and experiences:
- Demonstrates their skill and knowledge of coaching
- Experienced in identifying and solving the issues you are facing
- Has a formal education or training in coaching
- Displays excellent communication skills
Make sure you and your coach are a good personal fit.
- When you meet, does the candidate ask you the “right questions” about your goals. Such as, What has prevented you from achieving your goals? What will it look like for you when you achieve your goals?
- Is he or she listening or doing most of the talking?
- Does the chemistry feel right? What is your “gut feeling” telling you? Go with your gut feeling!
2. Ensure the coach’s style blends well with the way you like to work.
A good coach figures out what style will work best for you
and what will bring the results that you want to achieve.
Consider the following:
- Do you want step-by-step directions to help you achieve your goals? For example, being told what to do and how to do it.
- Would you rather be given options? Such as, being provided with different methods to solve a problem.
- Does the coach understand your preferences and know how to meet them?
3. Determine the coaching candidate’s personal style. Look
for someone who:
- Is people oriented
- Demonstrates good listening skills
- Offers unbiased and objective input
- Appears truly concerned about you and the welfare of your business
4. Think through your goals for working with a coach. Write
them down so you can refer to them during the interview.
- Why are you motivated to hire a coach?
- What has changed or not changed in your business or performance that makes you feel like you’re ready to take this decisive step?
- What specific result do you want to achieve from working with a coach?
5. Get client references.
Once you have a final candidate or two, obtain at least three
references from past or current clients. Ask these questions:
- Was the coach successful in helping them achieve their goals?
- What was the best thing about being coached by this person?
- What didn't they like?
- Would they hire the coach again?
