Move Out: Guide to checking out

As we near finals week of spring term, it is time to think about checking out of your hall/co-op. Our staff are prepared to help with your departure and will be on hand to answer questions and check you out of your room.

All halls and cooperative houses close at Noon on Friday, June 13.

Checkout process:
Step 1: Sign up
  • Sign up ahead of time with your hall/co-op staff to check out of your room.  More information about checkout sign-ups can be found with your RA/CD. Please pick a time that works well for you and is no more than 24 hours after your last final. If you miss your checkout appointment or do not sign-up ahead of time, you may be assessed a $50 Improper Checkout Fee.
Step 2: Clean up
  • Your room must be empty of all personal belongings and trash, and clean prior to your checkout time. For more information.
Step 3: Finish up
  • After your room is empty and clean, stop by the hall front desk for your check out envelope for your key(s). If the desk is not open please call the hall duty phone.
  • You will be asked at the desk if all of your belongings are out and your room is clean. If any of this hasn’t been done you will be asked to complete that before you receive your check out envelope for your key(s).
  • Next, return your room key, and suite key (if applicable) in your check out envelope to the service center. Please know that if any of these items are not returned, you will be charged for their replacement.
Important Notes:
  • Your room will receive an official inspection for damages by UHDS staff after the building has closed.  Any damages found will be charged to your student account.  If there are multiple residents in a room, charges will be split across all contracted residents for the space before July 1.
  • You must check your ONID email and your OSU student account frequently during the summer for added move-out-related charges.  If you do not agree with any charges, please immediately submit a UHDS Financial Appeal per the guidelines, found here.

Friendly Reminders:
  • Unused UHDS Dining Dollars on your account will be lost if not used by Friday, June 13, 2014, however, Orange Rewards funds do not expire. Log on to your MyUHDS account to see your current Dining Dollar and Orange Rewards balance.  The UHDS Dining Dollar Budget Guide can help you manage the remaining dollars on your account during the last few weeks of the academic year. Unused UHDS Dining Dollars can be used to purchase food items that will be donated to support the Linn-Benton Food Share. The last day to change your meal plan was June 1.
  • Please remember to take your bikes with you when moving out. All bikes that are left behind after June 13 will be removed by Public Safety and taken to surplus property.
We thank you for choosing to live and dine on campus this year. For more information on the closing process, see here.  We wish you a wonderful summer, and hope to see you back in September!

Move-Out Donation Drive has begun

It took your 30 weeks to move into your room; now you have 2 weeks to move-out! Check out this guide for a suggested timeline for getting things done before final exams hit.

This week you should have received your door hangers for the Donation Drive, which included bags you can use to sort out donations in your room (if you did not, pick yours up from your front desk).

Donation bins have been placed on the main floor of your hall and are ready for your use! Items accepted for donation include:

  • Food that is unopened and non-perishable (please place in bag provided grocery bags)
  • Toiletries and personal hygiene products (please place in bag provided grocery bags)
  • Dry clothing, bedding and towels
  • Household items like décor, dishes, lamps, electronics, etc.
  • Broken electronics, CDs/DVDs and ink cartridges (to be recycled)
  • Furniture and loft bed kit wood (place outside next to your dumpster)

This week, floor recycle bins will be relocated to the main floor so both donations and recycling can be taken to one place.

Get more details about the Donation Drive on Campus Recycling’s website.

  • June 5 is the last day to submit UHDS Dining Plan change requests.  If you have a large balance, lower your dining plan ASAP.

  • Summer RAs will have Summer-Only dining plans added to their ID Cards after June 16.

New: Slack line area added to south side

Attention Slackers,

Out of respect to your amazing balance, as well as a desire to take the tension of trees on campus, University Housing & Dining Services has installed a series of poles that can be used to stretch webbing between. The new slack line area is the on the south side of campus between Halsell Hall and Southside Station @ Arnold.

Please come enjoy the area as a place to practice your tricks and stunts, or simply to hang out and watch others engage in the sport of trying.

Slackers need to provide their own gear. All slacklining in this area is performed at your own risk, so please exercise caution and spot new slackers.

Input needed: Lounges, common areas and kitchens

UHDS Facilities Maintenance and Construction would like to know what you, the students, think about some of the lounges, common areas and kitchens in the UHDS buildings that you live and dine in.

The facilities team realizes that some spaces need a little extra care and renovation this summer and want to know things that you think should be repaired or remodeled in the near future.

Email us your ideas!! Please remember that we only have the ability to work on the UHDS buildings (the residence and dining halls). If you send us an email be sure to include as much information on the issue as possible, including the building and room number if possible. If you would like to submit a picture to us please do so by attaching it to an email addressed to UHDS Work Coordination or call in a suggestion to 541-737-2032.

Thank you! Go Beavs!

New residence hall named Tebeau Hall

Oregon State University will name its new residence hall after William "Bill" Tebeau, a pioneering student who persevered through numerous challenges to become the first African American male to earn a degree from the university.

William Tebeau Hall, located just east of the Kerr Administration Building on Washington Way, will open in fall of 2014. A dedication ceremony will be held at the site in October.

Tebeau was admitted to what was then Oregon State College in 1943 and, according to stories, was not offered a housing assignment because of the color of his skin. Undaunted, he took a job in a fraternity tending the furnace in exchange for a room in the basement and set out in pursuit of an engineering degree, which he received in 1948.

“Bill Tebeau did not let this act of bias keep him from his goals, and he went on to a tremendously successful career – staying connected to his alma mater for his entire life," said Dan Larson, executive director of University Housing and Dining Services at OSU.

"Our history does not always reflect the best of us," Larson said. “The naming committee and UHDS Leadership believed strongly that honoring Mr. Tebeau by naming our newest residence hall after him not only recognizes a man of great humility and strength, but will represent our ongoing commitment to learning from our past, the imperative of seeking our own personal awareness and growth and an unwavering pursuit of a socially just community.”

Born in 1925, Tebeau grew up in Baker, Oregon where he was an avid Boy Scout and ambitious student. After graduating from Baker High School, he was admitted to Oregon State College, where his lifelong love of education continued. After earning his Chemical Engineering degree at OSU , he received his civil engineering license and joined the State Highway Department (later Oregon Department of Transportation), where he enjoyed a 36-year career doing everything from surveying and planning to designing highways and bridges. He also taught part-time at Chemeketa Community College, and in 1970 was named the institution's Teacher of the Year.

In 2010, he was inducted into the OSU Engineering Hall of Fame. Tebeau died at the age of 87 on July 5, 2013, leaving behind his wife of 62 years, Genevieve, seven children, 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

When completed, William Tebeau Hall will house about 324 students. The five-floor, 76,400-square-foot building will become OSU's 15th residence hall. The $28 million facility, which is adjacent to Wilson and Callahan halls, is funded through state bonds that will be repaid by resident fees.

Call for research participants from 'quad' halls

Megan Knight, a graduate student in the OSU School of Design & Human Environment, is seeking volunteers to aid in her research for a thesis in the topic of human behavior in the near environment.

Specifically, she is seeking participants to take part in a short interview about their perception and experience in the lounges and common spaces in their resident hall. She has tentatively named her study "Students' perception of the design of common space and its role in sense of community and belonging."

Participants must be at least 18 years of age, a native English speaker, and have lived in one of the following residence halls during the 2012-13 or 2013-14 academic years: Hawley, Buxton, Poling or Cauthorn.

Participants will receive a $10 gift certificate. To participate, please contact the Principal Investigator Dr. Marilyn Read via email to schedule an interview.

We need your help, Beaver Nation. The sketch is of the new classroom building being built on campus. It will house nearly 3,000 total seats for learning. However, it needs a name. That’s where you come in.

  2. Person — a name that honors someone who was instrumental in Oregon State's history
  3. Place — a name that describes or links to a place or local location of importance
  4. Purpose — a name that describes the purpose and goals of the new classroom building

Only comments with a suggested name AND CATEGORY will qualify. One entry per person will be counted. Also, feel free to give a reason for why you suggested the name you did.

On Friday, June 6 at 11:59 p.m., comments will be closed and one suggestion from each category submitted online, via web form or email, will be selected at random. The owner of the suggestion will receive one of the following prizes:

International students: Share your culture through a donation to the IRC

Construction will soon be completed for Oregon State University's new Student Experience Center (under construction on the east side of the Memorial Union).

When completed, the International Resource Center will be open! But what would the center be without any representations of the rich cultures of Oregon State's international students?

The center needs your help! If you have any cultural items (clothes, trinkets, toys, decorations, etc.) that you don’t need or want to haul around when you move in the summer, please donate them to the center! The staff will be sure to find them a good home for them in the International Resource Center. Your items will help enrich the experience of future students!

For information or to arrange a donation, please contact Rone Nop (Coordinator of the International Resource Center) via email or call 503-621-2690.
