London Connect's digital health community bid:
In top 21 of Bloomberg's European City Mayor's Challenge

Former New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, runs the European City Mayor’s Challenge – a competition to generate innovative ideas to tackle pressing city problems and improve the lives of the people living in them - with a grand prize of €5 million and four runner up prizes of €1 million each. A collaboration between London Connect and the Greater London Authority (GLA) was chosen as London’s winning idea and now their entry, ‘Digital Citizens: The Road to Good Health’, has been selected from over 155 applications spanning the whole of Europe to make it to the final 21.

The bid centres around creating a digital health community – a movement of Londoners with diabetes initially, expanding to those with other conditions over time – who continually generate data to help them and health services better manage their health. It touches on all areas of London Connect’s work by drawing on learnings from the Information Governance and Online Records Communities. Sam Meikle, London Connect Director, will be attending the ‘Ideas Camp’ in Berlin in June as part of the competition’s next step.

Using information to improve care

The work of London Connect is continuing to gain greater recognition and momentum across London and abroad. Sam Meikle was recently the keynote speaker at the Royal Institute of Great Britain, speaking on the impact of digitisation in care. Sam also spoke at the Medical Informatics World Conference in Boston during April on how London is using information to improve care. The Health Innovation Network is proud to host this innovative pan-London programme and support its important work.

Co-produced experience metrics to improve dementia services in Croydon

We are working with Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust to develop ways to improve the experience of health services among people with dementia and their families and carers. A process, known as a Delphi exercise, is being used to develop experience metrics. This involves asking people with dementia, their carers and people who regularly interact with them to rate the importance of various statements about their experience of care. The reports that have informed this work What is Person Centred Care and What Is Important to People With Dementia are available on our website.

If you are interested taking part in the Delphi survey and joining the discussion about dementia experience, please join the online discussion, join a focus group, or contact our Patient Experience Senior Project Manager, Charlotte Wood.

Patient safety: What keeps you up at night?

‘What keeps you up at night?’ was the questions asked to a group of Board members from across South London who gathered for Prof. Jim Reinertsen's Leadership for Safety masterclass.

Issues such as safe handover and transfer of care, and care of vulnerable populations out of hospital figured highly on worry lists. Practicalities such as ensuring that patient safety initiatives are not overly bureaucratic, creating learning environments that promote safety and inspire people, and keeping the focus on safety issues once they are ‘fixed’ also kept Board members up at night.

Professor Reinertsen agreed that it can be a challenge to balance multiple, often conflicting ‘priorities’ and suggested leaders choose their priorities for action based on existing evidence. He also provided some practical strategies for leaders to stay in touch with operational realities - including reality rounding and house-wide daily safety briefings. NHS England Integrated Digital Care Fund

NHS England has opened round two of the Integrated Digital Care Fund (formally the Safer Hospitals, Safer Wards Technology Fund). The £240m fund is open until 14 July 2014 to applications from NHS Trusts and local authorities, individually or in partnership, to support projects which aim to digitise and integrate patient information across the health and care sector. More details are available here.

We're keen to hear what Trusts and local authorities across South London are planning to submit, in order to help facilitate any potential partnerships or cross-fertilisation of ideas. If you are considering a bid, please contact Sam Meikle at London Connect.

We are currently recruiting four Darzi Fellows across our MSK, dementia, alcohol and diabetes clinical area. PPI, patient experience, participation, engagement, patients at the heart... ...what do we really mean?

On 8 May, the HIN and the CLAHRC PPI Group held a partnership event with guest speaker Gill Ereaut from Linguist Landscapes to explore the language of patient experience and engagement. Gill presented findings from research into the language of involvement, participation, experience and engagement - Patients First - and work in Leeds to explore the patient-clinician conversation - Right Conversation.

Those present joined an interesting debate to explore - What is going on here? Does ‘woolly’ language indicate woolly thinking?  What are the risks of continuing to use this language? Is there a way we can all be clearer about what we mean? Can we use language better to help patients, staff and others across the healthcare system bring about real change in the relationship between that system and its users? Learn more about this conversation here or contact Sam Hudson.
