Kingsthorpe College
Debbie Morrison Welcome from the Principal

Dear Parents

Welcome back after half term.

During the half term week I was very pleased to be able to make some further staffing appointments so I am pleased to say that KC is fully staffed with specialist teachers in every subject area for September. In this current educational climate it is sometimes hard to appoint quality staff, especially in the core subjects, so we are thrilled to have some additional outstanding teachers joining our team. I will share all their details with you in a later newsletter so you can see who may be teaching your son or daughter.

Increased staffing has also meant that we have been able to add some additional subjects into our curriculum model for students moving into Post 16 and also into Year 10 options. We see the addition of Business Studies for Year 10 students as well as Health and Social Care. We are also introducing our own Hair and Beauty course. Year 12 will also now be able to study Music Technology as well as Health and Social Care which in the past they had to go to elsewhere to study. I know students are excited about these new subjects complementing the already very extensive options choices.

Tuesday evening I had the pleasure and privilege, along with the Chair of Governors, of witnessing some incredible talent at the musical recital. Everyone involved was excellent and the range of instruments and experience was vast - from year 7s doing their first ever public performance through to some ‘seasoned’ members of staff who demonstrated, through their playing, just how lucky we are to have them teaching our students. What was also special, for me personally, was the chance to meet some of KC’s parents for the first time and start to build that crucial partnership of working together. I look forward to meeting many more of you soon, hopefully at the up and coming Progress Day.

Enjoy your weekend

KC Musical recital

This week we had a fantastic evening of music at KC. A varied programme was performed by a range of students and staff who were very brave to stand up in front of a packed audience who clearly enjoyed the evening. From grade 1 piano to grade 6 flute, we saw the breadth of progression at KC. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our subject teachers and peripatetic teachers for all their hard work in preparing our students to play and a massive thank you to our cast of 22 students for playing. This will be the first of many!

Star of the week

Purple House Star of the Week
Tom Gardner Year 12

Tom is an excellent example of a hard working pupil with 100% attendance who has been a fantastic role model throughout for KC. Thanks Tom

Red House Star of the Week
Courtney Barker Year 7

Courtney was one of the under 13 girl’s football team that won the County cup recently. Wonderful effort from Courtney and the team members.

Gold house Star of the Week
Billie Cockerill Year 10

After being inspired by the recent “Great British Sewing Bee” on BBC 1 Year 10 Textiles decided that they would run their own “Kingsthorpe Sewing Bee” and take on the “T-shirt Challenge”. Students worked in groups of two or three and were given a large man’s T-shirt. Their challenge: Transform and construct a different garment using the t-shirt and fabric found in the classroom.
Billie was one of the winners of this competition showing some excellent talent and creativity. Great work Billie.

Blue House Star of the Week

Northamptonshire Schools Golf Association
Under 18 Team Championship:

On Friday 23 May, our Under 18 Golf Team participated in the NSGA Golf Championship at Cold Ashby Golf Club.  This competition is a qualifying event for the ESGA Under 18 Championship at Woodhall Spa Golf Club in July.  This is an event that we regularly have a qualifying team selected for.  Our team consisted of Sam Gilkes (GO1), Ross Garlick (R3) and Hamdi Bulugma (GO10).  Cold Ashby Golf Club is a notoriously difficult course which was made more difficult by the blustery weather conditions.  The players took in to account these weather conditions and returned some solid stableford points scores to the clubhouse.  Ross Garlick scored 38 points, with Sam Gilkes scoring 32 points and Hamdi Bulugma with 28 points.  The best two scores are combined to determine the final leader board and with a total of 70 points the team finished a very impressive sixth place, was a great achievement considering that only 6 points separated the top 6 teams. We are very proud of our team – well done.

Progress Day 3

Our final parental consultation day of the academic year takes place on Thursday 26th June. In most cases, the appointment time will be the same as it was for the November Progress Day.  Students will be allowed home at 1pm to allow the appointments to start shortly afterwards.

You will have performance data from all terms of this year which will support a discussion about current attainment and targets for improvement.  Discussions between teachers, tutors and students have been taking place in lessons and in tutorials, so your child will have a clear understanding of their current progress.  It will be an opportunity to reflect upon progress made this year as well as plans and strategies for the next academic year or phase of transition.

As a College we really value your support in guiding your son and daughter to make progress in both Achievement and Attainment and we value your feedback to help us improve all that we offer you.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 26th June.

The Centenary Poppy Campaign

This week our student librarians have been creating a poppy garden as a symbol of Remembrance in support of The Royal British Legion’s poppy project.  The aim of the project is to cover the UK in red poppies throughout the First World War Centenary year and to promote a greater understanding of the First World War.

Our students really enjoyed the challenge of creating, building and planting the garden and are looking forward to seeing the results in September.

Kingsthorpe College awarded 30 Mountain Bikes

Over the past two years, Kingsthorpe College has worked closely with SUSTRANS, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity. This partnership has allowed us to offer our students a variety of cycling related opportunities including; free bike repair sessions, Bikeability training, an afterschool bike maintenance club and BMX coaching sessions.

More recently, we have also teamed up with British Cycling who have run a ‘Go Ride’ Programme to some of our year 7/8 students. This aimed to introduce students to the world of cycle sport and develop the skills needed for competitive cycling. The programme also provided a number of students with the opportunity to take part in competitive events against students from other schools and colleges in the county.

We are very excited to announce that our SUSTRAN’s officer, Will Milner, has been able to source the funding to provide us with 30 Mountain Bikes and all the necessary safety equipment! This means that from September 2014, Kingsthorpe College will be able to offer Cycling as part of the PE curriculum. We will also be running an extra-curricular cycling club for students, and providing the opportunity for them to take part in Competitive Race Events.

“I’d like everyone to be able to cycle more; to school, to college, to work, down the shops, across countries, anywhere. A big part of making this happen is helping people develop their fitness and control on the bike and showing them how much fun being on two wheels is. That’s why getting cycling into the sports curriculum in schools is such a great idea.”
