                                                                                                        July 2014
                      Summer's Here

It seems like yesterday we were waiting for the snow to end and the temperature to rise. Now we're in the thick of summer. Our Summer Reading Program has begun. Pick up a brochure to see what activities we've got going on this month, ending with Sciencetellers on August 1. And we've got other awesome stuff coming up as well, so read on.

Please forward this newsletter to family and friends who might like to know what's going on here at the ol' Octagon
Red Hook Public Library, that is.

Unless otherwise noted all programs listed in this newsletter are free and open to the public.

                        SE14 Sculpture

Leon Smith's Rimmoway Grand adorns the library's front yard as part of Sculpture Expo 2014. Other installations are scattered throughout the village. For more information go to Red Hook Community Arts Network website: www.rhcan.com or stop in the library for a brochure.

Our thanks go out to Rita Gentile, Conrad Levenson and Red Hook Community Arts Network for making this happen, and for making our village so beautiful!

                         More Peas, Please

Say, something appears to be sprouting in the Children's Learning Garden.

These pea plants will eventually grow up to cover our teepee (since we don't have any animal hides handy), making a cool place for kids to duck into this growing season.

                 Clifford Goes on the Road

Clifford has left the building. But don't worry, he's got a new gig at Little Feet Too, where he can hang out with the kids and have fun all day.

Initially stationed at the library on our front lawn to draw attention to the May 20 library budget vote, Clifford had been hanging at the library until his recent departure to begin a new adventure.

Thanks, Rebekah A, for capturing his ride for posterity.

                     Book Care Corner

Here's some handy tips for proper book handling.

Breaking in a New Book

To ease your brand new book into ready-to-read shape, follow these steps:

First remove the jacket if present. Place the book on its spine, gently pressing the covers open and holding the text block up perpendicular to them.

Now take about a dozen pages at a time from alternating sides of the text block, and smooth them down. Continue alternating front and back pages until you’ve met in the middle. Your book has now been properly conditioned and is ready to enjoy.

Torn Pages

Oops! If you should inadvertently tear a page or find one torn, please do not tape it.

We have special tape that does not dry up, shrink and yellow, as most home-use tapes will. Simply point out the errant leaf when you return the book to us, and our crackerjack team of repairers we will do its best to fix it.

                   Lending Library Items

We love to lend our books, books on CDs, DVDs, magazines and music CDs. That's what we're here for. When you check out an item you agree to certain things. You agree to take good care of these borrowed items and you agree to return them by their due dates or pay a late fee. Here's our loan policy:

Lending Periods
books, books on CDs   3 weeks with 1 renewal

music CDs, periodicals & DVDs   1 week with 1 renewal

Fines
books, books on CDs, magazines & music CDs   10¢ per day

DVDs   $1 per day

If you lose or ruin a library item you will be assessed the full cost of replacement. So you want to avoid that.

Keep in mind that other libraries have their own lending rules that are not necessarily the same as Red Hook's. If you check out an item that was requested from another library, the loan periods and late fees might be different from ours.

Library Raffle to Support Children's Programs

Friends of the Red Hook Public Library will hold a raffle to benefit the children's summer program. The prize is a Merino wool sheep pull toy (made with real Merino wool) made by the one and only Frank Campagna. He values it at $200, but we know anything he makes is priceless. Tickets are available at the library for a $1 or $5 for six tickets. Only a limited number of tickets will be available, so don't delay.

New Zealand processed Merino wool was hand hook-stitched using a nylon mesh and then mounted and glued to a maple wood armature. The ears are of cow hide leather.
