Dear Slipstreamers Riders and Parents,

Welcome to our weekly newsletter, packed with a loads of new announcements (and some reminders) for your attention! This week's issue is brimming with updates, reminders and the all important race results - please do read and enjoy!

Slipstreamers Race Day 1 Report

“Race Day” was an idea submitted to the Slipstreamer’s Committee by the Rider’s Representatives. The youth riders felt that as well as some of the coach led racing scenarios, it would be good to expose the entire club to more frequent racing. The committee accepted this as a wonderful initiative and started to put some plans together. Two dates have been allocated, the first being last weekend and the next is planned for July 19th, which is being promoted as “Hillingdon Slipstreamers Go-Ride Tour”.

Part 1 - Time Trial

Last Saturday started with a particularly wet and miserable early session Time Trial. The rain did ease off a little and by the end of  the session was quite pleasant. 11 youth riders and 1 adult started, and the results were as follows:
Final Position Bib Number Last Name First Name Club Time
1 36 Skilton Luke Farnham 26:20.3
2 40 Hewson Peter Slipstreamers 27:15.2
3 42 Ryan Ben Slipstreamers 27:45.5
4 41 Norwood James Slipstreamers 28:33.6
5 45 George Nathan Slipstreamers 29:17.1
6 39 Harrop Matt Slipstreamers 30:39.0
7 37 Herrod Ross Slipstreamers 31:07.7

Part 2 - Race Day Commences!

Next, we moved onto the full race programme. This was designed to introduce novice racers to some of the procedures, protocols and demands of racing organised and even longer races. Signing on, being gear checked and warming up are all essential parts of youth cycle racing – an opportunity to get familiar with events.

The “Mudslingers” took to the circuit first. The mountain bikers who like the damp conditions were not disappointed as the rain came down again hard. They all set off to complete 3 laps of the circuit – something they rarely get the opportunity to do.

UNDER 6's – 3 laps:
Boys:
1st JayJay Lloyd; 2nd Ted Vasey (2 laps); 3rd Sanooj Menon (2 laps)

UNDER 8's – 3 laps:
Boys:
  1st Miles O'Brien; 2nd Indris Robertson; 3rd Lucas Robinson; 4th Sayooj Menon

UNDER 10's – 3 laps:
Boys
: 1st Sacha Araujo; 2nd Kai Lloyd; 3rd William Jones

UNDER 12's – 3 laps:
Boys:
1st Lawrence Horswood; 2nd Tomas Williams
Girls:  1st Hope Wilson; 2nd Sophie Rowley

UNDER 16's – 3 laps:
Boys:
1st Brian Wood

The road racers then made their way to the start line, first with the under 8’s. Officially the hardest of hard-nuts, they waited patiently on the apron under a collection of umbrellas and coats. The weather changing from a downpour to a near washout. The under 8’s raced a full race time of 20 minutes, managing to cover 4 laps of the circuit. Results are as follows:

UNDER 8's:
Boys:
1st Pascal Giret; 2nd Ben Coppola; 3rd Finlay Hawker; 4th Aaron Shearwood; 5th Max Roscoe (3 laps - good going!)
Girls: 1st Astrid Spragg; DNF Kim Bowler (4 laps)

Special mention goes to Max Roscoe who put in a fine performance on only his second week at Slipstreamers; and Kim Bowler – the newest Bowler to make it onto a road bike! Well done to both of you!

The Under 10’s and Under 12’s were set off at the same time, giving the U12’s a slight head start. The weather had eased off, and riders took advantage of this to start working hard in some pretty tight groups. It was noted that nearly all riders in these categories have learnt that it is not beneficial to ride around on your own, but to group together and share the work. Well done guys! The time allocated to this race was 30 minutes – the duration expected to race in most organised British Cycling races. Results are:

UNDER 10's:
Boys
: 1st Elliot Moreve; 2nd Jude Ackland; 3rd Ben Bisson; 4th Tom Stringer; 5th William Roake; 6th Jimmy Graham/ Alex Franks; 7th Dennis Marjanov; 8th Taylor Evans; 9th Alexander Williams; 10th Dylan Williams-Prior; 11th Thomas Gordon
Girls: 1st Amelie Taylor; 2nd Caris Wang

UNDER 12's:
Boys:
1st Nathan George; 2nd Finn O’Brien; 3rd Harvey Dash; 4th Joshua Goraya; 5th Ross Herod; 6th Otis Wang; 7th Leo Griffiths; 8th Ben Taylor; 9th William Mavin; 10th Max Saunders; 11th Alfie Bridgen; 12th Joseph McLemon; 13th Hamish Forsyth; 14th Thomas Smith
Girls:  1st Jemma Bowler; 2nd Jessica Henning; 3rd Lia Leonard; 4th Issy Bailey; 5th Remi Benhajkacem; 6th Anastasia Vockic

The final race of the day was the U14/U16 race. The time allocated to this was 40 minutes, which is in excess of most British Cycling races. This was a chance for the older end of the club to test their mettle and challenge both themselves and their club mates. The U16’s were given a slight head start, but it was obvious from the off that the performance of the day was going to come from the U14’s. Almost immediately, a group of four U14’s raised their game and set out to lay down a steady and well organised pace. The U16’s, by comparison, started quite slowly and rode steady for most of the race. The U16’s did put in a furious sprint at the finish, led by Sam Henning and Will Scott. In the end, without the aid of camera equipment, it was too close to all with both riders being awarded top spot. Results recorded over 15 laps are as follows:

UNDER 14's:
Boys: 1st Tom Portsmouth; 2nd Peter Hewson; 3rd Morgan Evans; 4th Nicholas Rayner; 5th Ciaran Reed; 6th Matthew Harrop; 7th Sam Farman; 8th Josh Webb; 9th Stephen Rabey; 10th Thomas Horswood; 11th Thomas Atkinson; 12th Fin Dyer; 13th Charlie Aveline;  DNF Oscar Elkington  (worn cleats)
Girls: 1st Savannah Hewson; 2nd Elizabeth Marvelly; 3rd Aimee Wood

UNDER 16's – 15 laps:
Boys:
1st (tie) Sam Henning and William James Scott; 2nd James Norwood; 3rd James Rabey; DNF Ben Ryan (11 laps)
Girls: 1st Hannah Keating; 2nd Ella Buckroyd

If you came first and didn't receive a medal last Saturday, we'll be presenting these this coming Saturday. If you miss the presentation, not to worry - we'll hang onto it for you. And of course, if any riders think they should be listed in the results, but are not - just let us know and we'll double check our records.

We thoroughly enjoyed promoting this “Race Day” and hope all the riders did too. Remember, every race is a chance to learn and every next race is a chance to improve. And finally, if anyone has any photos from the session, please send them over - we'd love to see them!  Well done to everyone who took part, and a big thanks to everyone who helped organise!!

Olympic Velodrome Visit - Report & Photos

The long awaited Slipstreamer visit to the velodrome on Sunday was a truly thrilling experience for all involved. For those of us that were non-riding participants we can only begin to imagine what it must have felt like - but none the less, we think we all took great pleasure from the day. The collection of photographs (jump here for the links to view) can only start to portray what an exciting day out it was. Just look at the riders faces - focus and commitment throughout. I don't think any words that are written now could reflect the electric, yet realxed, atmosphere of both the venue and the riding.

For those that have only ever ridden track at Calshot, this must have been an awesome venture into full size track riding. We hope you all appreciated the difference of the layout and structure of this track compared to other tracks you may have visited. As coaches, we recognise the value that this sort of experience brings both to your confidence and development of your track careers. It was noted how well you all adapted from your first session in the warm up to the superb racing you all demonstrated in your scratch race.

The B and C groups took part in a 200m flying lap - a very different format to that which you may have tried at Calshot. The recorded times are as follows:

Joe Newbould 14.06 Seconds
Izzy Atkins 18.48
Michael Stark 14.23
James Kennet 15.15
Hannah Keating 15.56
Rob Newbould 14.07
Mark Harrop 15.20
Savannah Hewson 16.59
Ella Buckroyd 15.69

Joe McGuinness 15.05
Mark Devlin 15.01
Kai Lewis 17.14
James Piercy 15.42
Richard Piercy 15.36
Zeb Breen 16.21
Matt Harrop 16.40
Emile Ghattas 16.94
Morgan Evans 15.78
Orla Devlin 16.32
Ian Portsmouth 14.04
Tom Portsmouth 16.46
Andy Shearwood 14.52
Paul Martingell 17.00

The winner of the B Group Scratch race was James Kennett, and the Group C was Tom Portsmouth.

Fantastic riding by everyone - and if your dad is currently the fastest 200m rider in your house, remind him that he may not be for long!!!

To view the full set of photos, where every single Slipstreamer who took part is captured either on or off the track:

If anyone is named incorrectly please let us know; and indeed if anyone has additional photos they want added, please email them across and we'd be happy to include these. Enjoy!

Special Mention - MTB Coaches Excel!!

Big congratulations to Frances Pressner, John Gunn and Paul Wood in completing their Level 2 Mountain Bike coaching award with British Cycling.  With a VERY special mention to Frances in completing her L2 MTB paperwork with an outstanding 100% pass mark!

These qualifications allow the club to formally extend its Mountain Bike coaching activities to more technical terrain such as Dews Farm and the Lookout.

Well done coaches!

Fancy Supporting Your Coach for a Good Cause

Paul Martingell, one of the club's Silver Level 2 coaches, is raising funds for the Downs Syndrome Association by riding the London Prudential 100 mile event on 10th August. Here's a peek of what Paul looks like (just in case you weren't sre):

Paul would be very grateful for donations (feel free to share this link with anyone else you know who might be interested in donating) to this very worthy cause via his fundraising page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PaulMartingell

Paul is very grateful for any amount of support, and will post training updates on the page as time goes by.
Please help support Paul and his chosen charity!

Kit Sale Update

Unfortunately, there will not be a kit sale this weekend - we will update you as soon as we know when this will be. In the interim, to help with ordering of storck, if anyone is interested in acquiring kit, please email kit@slipstreamers.co.uk directly with a ' wish list' detailing what you would like to buy, quantity, age, and your name.  We will then be able to advise you via email when you can expect this.

A Few Additional Reminders...

Nationals Update...

Not long to go now, if you can volunteer any time during the day, how ever long, it will help! Please let us know your availability. Also, if anyone has a marquee or two that you wouldn't mind loaning to us for the day, please get in touch - we may or may not use these, but it would be great to know we have these to hand if we need them!

Lookout Ride - Swinley Forest, Bracknell...

A reminder that the monthly social mountain bike ride is on this Sunday as normal - led by none other than our fantastic volunteers Theo and Frances (yes, the very one named above!), and with the support of our wonderful coaches and volunteers. Because the weather has been so fabulous, we will meet at the Lookout Centre at 9am for a 9.30am start - we advise arriving early to ensure you get a parking spot. If you've never ridden with us before, you are most welcome to join us - bring your family, bring your friends, bring your mountain bikes. Even if it's your first time on a mountain bike (or it's been a while since you brushed off the cobwebs and rode a bike!!), do come along - you won't regret it, and it's a fantastic morning out! Plus, you get to enjoy the amazing chocolate fudge cake from the canteen afterwards with zero guilt! :-)

CYCLING FACT (S) OF THE WEEK...

Criterium du Dauphine

As Chris Froome works hard to retain his title, did you know, after the Second World War, as cycling recovered from a nearly universal five- or six-year break, the newspaper Dauphiné Libéré decided to create and organize a cycling stage race through the Dauphiné region.

The race is set in June, just before the Tour de France. From its beginning this race was used as preparation for the Tour de France by French cyclists, including Louison Bobet and John Robic. It has also served as a test of both advanced equipment for the cyclists and for broadcast coverage, which is stressed in the mountainous region. The current form of the Critérium is the consequence of a merger with the Circuit of the Six-Provinces-Dauphiné in 1969.

The very first winner in 1947 was Edouard Klabinski from Poland. The Critérium has been won by all the quintuple winners of the Tour de France (Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Indurain). Nine racers have also won the Dauphiné Libéré and the Tour de France in the same year: Louison Bobet in 1955, Jacques Anquetil in 1963, Eddy Merckx in 1971, Luis Ocaña in 1973, Bernard Thévenet in 1975, Bernard Hinault in 1979 and 1981, Miguel Indurain in 1995, Bradley Wiggins in 2011/12 and Chris Froome in 2013. Will he do it again??

And finally, do remember the following important things:

1. Dress for the warm weather (but be ready for 4 seasons in a single day!), eat a healthy breakfast before you head out, and drink plenty of water!
2. Parents: park safely when you arrive please, i.e. stay off the grass verge at the gates, and park in the spaces provided!
3. Arrive on time for sign on - we start at 9am, we close at 9.30am!
4. Let us know ASAP if your phone numbers, address or emails change!

Stay safe and we'll see you on Saturday!
