Newsletter - July 2014

In this issue:

I would like to welcome old and new subscribers to the July edition of our newsletter - below are some of the forthcoming highlights that are happening both locally and further afield. I hope you will feel motivated to come and join in with some of our activities and groups.

The next Transition Belper Meeting will be held at Strutts Community Centre, Derby Road, Belper on Thursday 10th July at 7.30. At the meeting we'll check if we are prepared for the Food Fair and run through all the groups and projects to give an update and discuss proposals or issues.

Response to Tesco Planning Application

After much discussion and a huge amount of reading Ian Jackson, with the help of Richard Keighley, Kate Pudney and the Travel and Transport Group, has put together a Transition Belper response to Tesco's planning application related to access to the site for land to the North of Derwent Street. This was a huge undertaking in a short time so those involved deserve our thanks. You can read the full response document here.

Food Fair - 13th July

As usual we've booked a stall at the Food Fair where we hope to continue to get our message across to local residents. As it is a food fair we'll be selling herbs and seedlings to help pay for the cost of the stall. If you have seedlings, plants, herbs or spare veg in pots please bring them along or let us know and we'll arrange to collect them. We could also do with some help at the stall on the day. We'll be setting up from about 9.00 and will carry on until about 4.00. If you have plants you need collecting or can collect plants from others or can help on the day please email David.

Northern Green Gathering

Some of us will be travelling daily whilst others camp out at the Northern Green Gathering from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th July at a farm between Hulland Ward and Ashbourne. We'll have a gazebo with Transition Belper displays and leaflets that will need looking after and explaining. So far there are 5 or 6 of us who can take turns to look after the stall but there is probably room for 3 or 3 more volunteers. The benefit is free entry to the festival or, if you bring the family along, make a donation to Northern Green Gathering funds.

Crich Lane Community Garden Co-ordinator

Great news that Alice Russell has stepped forward to volunteer to co-ordinate the project to turn the Crich Lane Festival garden into a community garden. We'll now hold an open day at Crich Lane on Sunday 7th September to seek local community views, involvement and volunteers. Amber Valley Borough Council have said they will help with printing but we'll need help with delivering leaflets to all homes within about a 10 minute walk of the gardens. We'll also need help on the day to talk to residents and serve soft drinks and cakes. If you can help out please email Alice.

Belper Goes Green wind-up meeting

We'll use the August Transition Meeting (Strutts Community Centre on Monday 11th August at 7.30) to go through the positive and negative aspects of Belper Goes Green and decide whether we are capable of organising a 2015 event. We'll also have a slideshow of pics and possibly the official video (or at least some clips). We may even have Nicky Ward from Bowerwirks to display and explain the Belper In Voice community artwork that was being created at Belper Goes Green. We'll also be looking to have some cakes on hand by way of celebration.

By that time we'll have a summary of all the feedback and responses either at Belper Goes Green itself or via the online survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YR5GFK2
We have a lot that was good to celebrate about the event but it is also clear that some of the more worrying aspects need addressing if we are to repeat our success. The organisation needs to expand into a number of sub-groups each with total responsibility for an area of operations. We also need to find ways of either recruiting a lot more volunteers or spreading the weekend's workload via other organisations.

Those who put in many hours of work deserve our thanks and praise.

No 28 - The Market Place

Pippa at No28 asked me to make you all aware of some of the events coming up throughout July - see below:

No 28 will be open throughout the July Farmers Market and Food festival (12/13 July) with an exhibition of 15 graduate architects student projects for the Meadows Edge site. There is a debate on the proposals on the Saturday afternoon after the Farmers Market, to which Transition are invited. We have been asked to let them know who is going so they can judge numbers.

They are also open for the whole of the Belper Discovery Days weekend 19/20 July with a railway-themed exhibition and talk by Network Rail on the evening of 18 July on the electrification of the line.

Each month No 28 also runs a cafe alongside the Farmers Market with a variety of exhibitions, events and stalls - so if you get the chance pop in and have a look.
