 President's Message - CMAG Elections

It's that time again! CMAG's new year is about to begin. That means board elections and membership renewals. It's been a privilege serving as board president these past 8 months. I'm grateful to you all for bearing with me as I did lots of learning on the job. I want to also extend a great big thank you to all the other hardworking board members: Vice President Maggie Bowman, Treasurer Barbara Covey, Secretary Karen Craig, Newsletter Editor Michele Lukowski, Programs Director Bruce McKay, Education Director Cindy Proctor, and our newest board member, Deb Steele, Membership Officer. Deb, we are extremely grateful to you for taking on this important job. A special thanks also goes out to Kathryn Constant who has been tirelessly serving as our librarian for many years.
Elections for the 2014 / 2015 board positions will be held at our June meeting. Please come and let your vote be heard in support of our volunteers.
We will also be preparing for our annual membership drive. Anyone interested in helping Deb and our other board members with the membership mailing, please come to the meeting and let us know you are available.

CMAG Sponsored Workshop - Eric Burris
July 25th, 26th & 27th Hosted at Newberg Jewelry Studios
Renowned metalsmith Eric Burris will be at the Newberg Jewelry Studios this July to teach the process of Mokume Gane. For those unfamiliar with the process, this is an excellent opportunity to learn from one of the most respected mokume gane artists in the country.
Cost and Deadline
This workshop will be offered to members at the rate of $350. If you are not a member, and would like to join and take the workshop, the cost is $400. The non-member cost is $425. Stone Carving with Bruce McKay

Learn the ancient art of carving gemstones using modern tools and Oregon agate and jasper. This class is geared towards learning to carve using a flexshaft and basic bench tools.
Students will carve a rough piece into a highly polished jewelry sized gem ready to be worn or set into a piece of jewelry. Suitable stones for carving will be discussed and all stones for class work will be provided.
Day One and Two will be spent carving a design that includes all the basic carving techniques: slab trimming, drilling, grooving, shaping, concave plus convex surfaces, then taking the piece through the stages of grinding, sanding and up to a high polish.
Three is Open Studio where students can work on their own carving designs or learn basic cabbing.
The price of this Stone Carving Workshop includes a $100 tool kit of diamond carving tools that students get to take home.

Wax Carving Workshop with Bruce McKay
I am giving a workshop at the Multnomah Arts Center this July 12th and 13th on Wax Carving Organic Forms. Although the design to be produced in class will be a flower form, this class is about learning to create fluid organic forms without the strict symmetry that I have taught in my other classes. This is a class on how to loosen up and have fun carving. Please consider this Workshop, and pass on this opportunity to anyone you think might be interested. Wax Carving: Organic Forms Workshop
Learn to carve waxes into organic floral forms, creating pendants or brooches, ready to be cast into metal. Hand carve flowers from a solid block of carving wax using basic wax carving tools. Start with a basic five petal Plumeria and move on to carve a more complex flower.
Please note: We will not cast in this class, but learn how to carve fluid, organic, realistic flowers in wax. No prerequisite. Price includes materials fee of $70, which covers all demo materials and a set of wax carving tools for the students to keep. After 1st class, these fees are non-refundable.

Raising Workshop with Greg Wilbur
Greg Wilbur and Arnon Kartmazov will be teaching a 3-day workshop at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon coast, July 16-18. The course introduces students to the amazing world of hand-forging and provides them with an understanding of basic skills needed to shape iron rod and copper sheet by hand. Other projects and techniques will be considered for students with more experience. The Center for Metal Arts is now taking entries for the 2014 Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition. This year, Alan Revere, Founder and Director of the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, will join Hazel Wheaton, Editor of Art Jewelry magazine, and Charles Lewton-Brain, pioneer of foldforming, to round out the 2014 jury panel. Their job begins after midnight on June 16, 2014, this year's submission deadline.
Results of the competition are widely publicized. The Center for Metal Arts hosts the international Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition each year, and has partnered with Charles Lewton-Brain to release an art book this summer to celebrate the event’s inaugural two years. Art Jewelry magazine will present winning entries in a print issue and special online gallery again this year. Top entries are also shared in video format. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mention will include gift certificates from Rio Grande and hand-selected items from Charles Lewton-Brain. The Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition is a survey of the evolution of foldforming as it is applied in the world today in large and small scale; in jewelry, sculpture, architecture, functional objects, and unexpected applications. Recognition goes to excellence in craftsmanship, original or innovative design, and overall visual impact.
Master goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain is Head of the Jewellery/Metals Program at the Alberta College of Art and Design. He is a world renowned author, educator, artist, and has pioneered the innovative suite of metal techniques known as foldforming. He is the author of Foldforming, the definitive book on the topic.

When: General CMAG member meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 6:45pm, meetings begin at 7:15pm, and adjourn by 9:15pm.
Board meetings are generally held prior to the General Meeting at 6:00 pm in Room 33 at the MAC (same room as the regular meeting). Members are encouraged to attend and contribute.
