Striving to Succeed

"My daughter has been watching me struggle but when she sees me take out my worksheets, she has no excuse not to put the time and energy into her own homework."
The Gift of Opportunity
Mr. W on graduation day from Community College of Philadelphia

Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you are enjoying the start of the summer and are taking some time to relax.

As Dignity Housing enters into the new fiscal year, we can’t help but to reflect on the past year and all the amazing stories of progression and success both current and former Dignity residents experienced. The Dignity team worked hard and continues to give residents the support they need to make positive changes. From obtaining stable employment, to securing housing and transitioning from Dignity, applying to college, and graduating from college, it has been a year of transformation and opportunity. In Fiscal Year 2014, Dignity Housing served 160 individuals and families, providing a comprehensive range of services, including housing, supportive services, employment & education services, and scholarships for individuals pursing their educational goals.

Ms. G, a resident in the Dignity- III Better Options for Self-Sufficiency program (Dignity III-BOSS), entered Dignity Housing in the beginning of 2013 after spending nearly a year in an emergency shelter with her young daughter, now 11 years old. Ms. G never received a formal education-she currently tests at a third grade reading level. Once a week, Ms. G meets with the Education and Resource Coordinator for one-on-one tutoring. She has expressed that the personalized sessions are increasing her knowledge and confidence as well as earning the respect of her daughter. When she first entered Dignity in 2013, Ms. G earned $558 at her job and received $316 from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Now Ms. G is earning $700 a month from her job and is no longer on TANF.

Your gift, when combined with gifts from other supporters, helps make all of this and more possible for the individuals and families our programs serve. With your help, Dignity provided educational scholarships to Dignity residents, like Mr. W, who is pictured to the left, to pursue higher education goals. And you may recall a recent email updating you on Innocent Turner. With the help of supporters like you, Dignity provided a scholarship to help pay for a research trip to Europe. As part of the requirements to obtain her Master's degree in Social Work, Innocent is currently conducting in-depth research on international policies for and affecting foster children overseas. With the assistance of supporters, Dignity can provide supportive services and educational services that are helping residents like Ms. G be determined and work hard to provide and create a better life for herself and her daughter.

Your support also helps Dignity provide extra activities for residents, like the Education Resource Fair held in April, and the End of School Year BBQ celebration which took place last week.

Consider giving a gift of $50, $75, or even $100, but any size gift will have an impact. Your gift will help Dignity continue to provide services for individuals and families in Philadelphia, like Ms. G, Mr. W, and Ms. Turner, helping them to become self sufficient and thrive after graduating from Dignity Housing.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. I hope you have a wonderful summer!!

Sincerely,
