Navigating expectations
A new show is out this week. Those of you who have been listening for a while may remember a show I did last year called The Power of Image, in which we talked about how much looks matter to a woman's career. This show picks up with the same theme, but takes a different angle. Until last year, when I read this blog post during LGBT Pride month, I'd never thought about the job prospects of women who don't look - or care to look - feminine. Turns out they're not that great. And following the last show on what transgender guys' office lives teach us about women and work, this week we learn more about what happens when you transition in the other direction. You can apparently expect questions like this one: "How do you expect to deal with business when all you'll be thinking about is nail polish?"
Listen here or get the show on iTunes or Stitcher.
I was featured as a women-in-the-workplace expert on the LinkedIn Connect group last week, sharing insights from my interviews for The Broad Experience. If you don't know the group, it's the biggest professional women's group on LinkedIn, and the discussions are almost as broad as what I cover on this show (but not quite). I've found a couple of good guests through the group.

What can I say? It took me a while to recover. If you're in the New York area on Wednesday, July 16th, I'm hosting a happy hour with Jorli Peña of Sweet Resumes and would love to see you. The gathering will be held somewhere in Manhattan - location TBD. If you're interested, please let me know so I can get an idea of numbers.
I'm working on the next show, and some of you will be all too familiar with the topic: what happens to your career (or doesn't) when you come back to work after having a baby.
Happy Canada Day to my Canadian readers, and Happy 4th of July to the American ones. Brits, keep enjoying your summer while it lasts!
Until next time.
