Free range really isn't free...

Cows, cows and more cows...

More cows have been visiting in the past months. Uninvited, they arrive all hours of the day or night creating havoc for the horses, dogs and cats. Not to mention the toll on the ranch itself. In creating the Sanctuary over the past 15 years, it's been a labor of love. Annie slowly began creating a peaceful and picturesque landscape by planting a variety of trees and bushes. At one time there were over a hundred trees. Rock was hauled from the desert to create stone walls, plant surrounds and some fencing were added, and dry ponds were created to ease the rush of rain water during the monsoon season.

Currently the trees and bushes have taken a beating. We've lost 23 trees, over half of the bushes, flowers and ground cover are gone. Annie and I have been busy trying to keep up with pruning and disposing of broken branches, repairing fences and cleaning up after the cows, aside from the regular chores. The most frustrating part this is that it never seems to end. Once things start to shape up, the cows strike again.

Every visit brings a new round of destruction and more labor. The cows arrive mostly at night, so instead of getting rest, Annie's up all night chasing cows and doing chores during the day. I would arrive early morning to find her walking in from the property having sent them away once again. Many times with little to no sleep we begin the chores....

Our dream is to be able to fence in the entire Sanctuary. As of now we are looking for used utility poles. We can get them for free! But it's on a first come first served basis and Annie or I can't be everywhere, so if you are interested in helping us find and collect poles PLEASE let us know! I know some of you can't collect them, but you can call your local Utility Company to find out when they might have them on hand. With your help the fence will be done before you know it and once again the animals will be safe!

Once again our hearts are
heavy...

One day after our last newsletter,
Kaycee passed away... Watching
me fix her dinner, she fell to the
floor and died of a massive heart
attack. Even though she was with
us only five months and granted
she was 16... It doesn't hurt any
less.

Horsing around with
Monkey...

Handsome Monkey

Monkey is a 13 year old gelding
who was a reserve champion in
Barrel, Reining, and Show, until
he had an accident, tearing his
Sesamoid Ligament. His previous
owner could no longer care
for him, and not wanting him to go
to slaughter, she made an
appointment on May 3 to have
him euthanized. After all, nobody
wants a horse they can't ride...

She contacted me a couple of
weeks before his date, at first
I told her I couldn't take him that
I had just lost Sienna and wasn't
sure if I could keep doing this.
Of course that gave me 5 days
of nightmares... I could not get
Monkey out of my head! I just
could not justify him being put
down in the prime of his life over
what I consider a booboo!

So that said... Meet Monkey... LOL!

We are a forever home for special needs animals to live out their lives happy and healthy!

Announcing the 2014
Summer Matching Funds Challenge!

Now through Labor Day, you can help us earn $3,000! Thanks to a matching grant from a small group of donors, your donation will be matched penny for penny to up $3,000.

Help Our Gang make it through the long, hot, dry summer. There are typically fewer donations coming in during the summer months, but the animals still need to eat, have their medications, get vet care. Now you can help and make your gift go twice as far!

Donate now! Whether you are able to give $5 or $500, the animals thank you!

THANK YOU!

Here's Maggie...

Maggie came to us from another sanctuary that could no longer care for her. She originally came from Kentucky, her owner dumped her at a shelter where the county was getting ready to destroy all the animals. Maggie is very fearful, low thyroid & shy. We are not sure of all of her background, but we aim to bring her out of her shell.

          I think it's working...
               Ahhh... Yep!
               That's our girl!

A Word from Annie...

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in last year's Challenge as well as those of you who supported us throughout the year.

Because of you!  You have allowed me to keep up with the demands of all their medical, medications and supplies. Though for some their lives were short-lived, you allowed me to give these beautiful babies the comfort, love and care they had been so greatly deprived of...

As most of you know, it's been a long year, wiih the loss of Harley, Gizmo, Norman, Sienna, Kaycee, the flooding and everything else in between. Thanks to you we have been able to stay afloat!

All because of YOU!
