Farm of the week...

Pearson Farm

Pearson Farm is the peach sponsor for Peach Jam 2014! Cooks of all sorts are grabbing a bag of their delicious peaches to create BBQ sauces, Cocktails, Jams, Jellies and Cobblers . You gotta make it to all celebrations and get a taste of what their amazing peaches can do!

The Pearson family has been growing peaches and pecans on the same Georgia land as their great-great grandparents for over 100 years.  The farm follows sustainable farming practices to keep pesticide use to a minimum and is also preserving portions of the farm to balance the natural state of the land. Pearson Farm welcomes natural occurring pests that feed on the bad bugs. In the winter, trimmings from the peach trees are left on the ground to become compost, which helps to grow the trees in a more natural state. Pearson Farm is miles from Atlanta and their peaches are transported directly to markets without any long term storage, core-cooling, or waxing.

Can't wait for Peach Jam? Here is an idea..

Glue & Glitter Presents

Glue and Glitter is a blog by Becky Striepe, a local crafts and food writer with the mission of making vegan food and crafts available to everyone.

PeachBasil Lemon Drop

The basil in my garden is blowing up, and fresh, summery basil is so delicious mixed with fruit in a cold beverage. This summer cocktail features farm fresh peaches and lemonbasil infused vodka. You won't be sorry!

More basil cocktails: MapleBasil Mojito , PlumBasil Margarita

Ingredients

• 1 ounce of LemonBasil Vodka (instructions below)
• 2 basil leaves
• 1/4 of a fresh peach, chopped, plus extra for garnish
• 1 teaspoon maple syrup
• soda water

Method

1. Muddle the vodka, basil, peach, and maple syrup in a highball glass.

2. Fill the glass the rest of the way with ice cubes and top it off with your soda water.

3. If you’re doing the garnish thing, grab a small slice of peach, score the fleshy side (not the side with the skin on it), and hang it from the rim of your glass. Fancy!

LemonBasil Vodka Instructions: Slice up half a lemon and cram it into a half pint mason jar with 2 tablespoons of fresh basil. Fill the container up with vodka, and let it sit overnight. Boom! If you don’t want to go through all of that waiting, you can use regular vodka. I will never tell.

ENJOY!

Atlanta: Let's make this happen!

Our friends from The Spotted Trotter have a great surprise: They will be joining the upcoming Krog St Market with their second charcuterie in the city and first restaurant, The Cockentrice!
It's been an incredible feat for them to make this happen and they now need our help to fully realize it. They have started a Kick Starter campaign that ends the first week of August (for those not familiar with Kick Starter, if the deadline arrives and all the funds needed are not raised, they get none.) So the race has begun and any pledge of support will make a difference. Why help? you will be investing in a concept that has never been seen in the city -- full animal butchery and a restaurant that will put Atlanta on the map for true, Southern charcuterie -- a 2000 year-old art that has yet to be fully explored in the South. But they also offer amazing rewards for the donations including classes, private dinners and more! Go toThe Spotted Trotter' Kick Starter campaign page to learn more and make a pledge today!

Meet William Whitley Abel from Ups and Downs farm in Franklin, Georgia. A place of abundant harvest and healthy happy animals. William is currently gathering efforts to renovate the cabin at the farm to better serve its community.
Watch the KickStarter interview and fall in love with this charming place, there are some tasty advantages for your pledge to help.

DOUBLE SNAP

The Decatur Market is a grateful partner of Wholesome Wave Georgia, an organization that doubles every SNAP/EBT dollar spent at the market. Families using SNAP get twice the purchasing power for healthy food!  $1 = $2. Visit the main info booth to get SNAP tokens or to find out how you can support the program.

Bike to the Market

Your efforts to support your community don't have to end at buying local. Choose walking or biking to the market instead of car transportation, and help improve your neighborhood's carbon footprint. Cruise the roads of the East Atlanta Village and enjoy the outdoors in support of your community.

Driving to the market?  Park on the sidestreets off Stokewood Ave or try the lot located at 1231 Glenwood Ave - open tonight only from 4 to 8  for market patrons .
