BBQ FRIDAY
Join in a fun row and barbeque at the club Friday, June 27, at 6 pm. Rowers of all levels and ages welcome. Please bring your own item to grill or munch. Thanks to Bob O’Connell and Silvia Helou for organizing this event. If you missed the recent evite to this event, drop a note to
nereidsec@hotmail.com so we can be sure to update your address on the list.
PUT A SOCK ON IT
Following the lead of area high school programs, we ask all rowers to avoid single-use, disposable water bottles and rather use refillable, multi-use bottles. This will reduce the amount of debris around the boathouse and in the river—those single-use bottles very easily blow off the dock and into our beloved Passaic. And if you take a bottle with you in the boat,
put a sock on it—literally! The sock prevents damage to the interior of the boat. Thanks for supporting this initiative.
NO DUES, NO ROWING
Please be advised that any rower who has not paid dues in full by July 15 will have rowing privileges suspended. Sorry to take a hard line but we need those dues to pay expenses. If you have special circumstances, please contact Membership Chair Josie DiLena at
jadl153@aol.com. Thanks!
SOUTHBOUND BAN REMAINS
Please note that the ban on rowing south of the Route 3 Bridge is still in place as we have not been able to install hazard markers around the River Mile 10.9 site yet. The board is working hard to resolve this as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience and cooperation.
NEXT REGATTA IN PHILLY
Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia is just around the corner! Join the Nereid delegation by registering on
Regatta Central for this July 4-6 race. Deadline is June 27 at 11:59 pm; register until July 2 at 11:59 pm with a late fee. Both juniors and masters are competing and we have just one trailer so boat-sharing may be required. Remember to email Sheila at sheila.oshea@comcast.net to request a club boat and cc: Silvia silviahelou@hotmail.com to reserve trailer space. The boats currently scheduled to go to Philly include:
- 4x: Peter Willcox
- 2x: Amanthia, Thoosa, Erik King, Pherusa, Nereus, Eudore, Calypso
- 1x: Cute and Single, David Ma
COOPER RESULTS
Kicking the season off in fine fashion, Nereid masters won two gold medals at the June 21 Catch the Cooper in Camden. Joe Giles and Nick Benedetto took first in their heat of the Men’s Masters 2x and Eric Hagberg was first in Men’s Masters Lightweight 1x. Nice job guys and congrats to the 11 Nereids who raced!
BOAT CERTIFICATION AT NEREID
Save the date: Nereid will run a Boat Safety Certification class at the boathouse July 19 and 20 from 11 am to 2:30 both days. Taught by the Coast Boating School, the class will consist of off-water instruction followed by an onsite exam. Those who pass will receive a temporary Boat Safety Certification card. The cost is $75. If more than 30 participants sign up, the price will go down. Email program director Bonnie Pugel if you are interested: bjpugel@comcast.net
NEW MASTERS PROGRAM?
Program director Bonnie Pugel is exploring the possibility of a new summer evening masters program for rowers determined to improve their race times over the course of the season. Sessions would be coached by Reuben Man, with exact days, times and cost to be determined. The current thinking is that the sessions would be for quads only, three times per week, from 6 to 8 pm, starting after the Independence Day Regatta. This program would be for rowers who can make the sessions consistently, with subs used only in the case of emergencies. Sound right for you? Please contact Bonnie ASAP at
bjpugel@comcast.net to indicate your interest.

TLC FOR OUR FLEET
A note from Captain Sheila O’Shea:
Dear Nereids: Our beautiful fleet of Empachers is being damaged by careless boat handling.
In the past few weeks alone, I have seen rigger dings, scratches, gashes, etc., on numerous club boats, including the Thoosa 2x, the Phereusa 2x, the John Van Der Tuin 4x and the green Peinert 1x. Coach Sarah Kornblum has inspected the entire fleet and reports that an "alarming" number of club boats have similar damage. Most of this damage occurs when people take boats on and off the racks and scratch the hulls on the riggers of the boats above. I have ordered plastic nut covers in an attempt to alleviate the problem. However, as we will be rowing these boats for years to come, I implore all rowers to use extra care when handling club boats. If you do damage a club boat either on or off the water, please email me immediately: sheila.oshea@comcast.net.
I am sharing this message both with junior rowers and coaches as well as masters—it’s up to all of us to take responsibility for maintaining the fleet. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
And PS: don’t forget to clean the slides after every row!
BRICK CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Now’s your chance to support Nereid, beautify the club grounds, and set your love of rowing in stone (well, in brick)! Nereid’s ongoing brick campaign will come to a close in late May. These bricks will be used for a walkway at the entrance of the club. We are still looking for 100 percent participation from all Nereid members and juniors—so if you didn’t yet buy a brick, please do so! Bricks come in three sizes, ranging from $100-$500, with prices slightly higher with a graphic included. We have many great graphics along with logos for Nereid, Montclair High School, and Head of the Passaic Regatta. We can also upload other images if you want to use your own.
