Dear CHWC friends,

We've had an enormous amount of activity here at CHWC this summer.  We have all been working very hard to rebuild our neighborhoods. New homes are rising up in several neighborhoods, and we continue to rehabilitate foreclosed and abandoned homes throughout the community. Hopefully, many of you have noticed the recent neighborhood activities under way as well including the new EPIC Park at 6th and Tauromee, the Splitlog Farm at 11th and Splitlog and the outstanding new murals installed by CHWC's Art Squad which are reviving our once forgotten alleyways.   Lastly, if you haven't taken advantages of one of CHWC Housing Workshops including our Homebuyer Education and our Commoncents workshops in partnership with Heartland Habitat for Humanity, please check out our calendar of events on our website.

I would also like to update you on several staffing changes at CHWC. Please join me in congratulating CHWC's new staff directors:

Jaime Aguirre - Director of Resource Development
Brennan Crawford - Director of Housing & Economic Development
Steven Curtis - Director of Community Building & Engagement
Sara Fitts - Director of Finance

We are also promoting form within and have moved Claudia Uribe, currently our Administrative and Marketing Assistant, to a new position as Real Estate Development Assistant, where she will be assisting our construction and project managers. Claudia is an outstanding addition to our CHWC team and we are excited for her to move into her new role.

Sincerely,
Donny Smith
Executive Director

Loretto Companies are CHWC's 2014
Center Circle Challenge Sponsor. Loretto Companies was started to give back to a community that has given so much to both Lamar Hunt Jr. and James Arkell. They are both passionate about Kansas City and love the opportunity to explain why they are proud to call it home. Loretto Companies goal is to help rebuild neighborhoods and communities by purchasing homes and commercial properties in need of repair, repairing those properties, and renting them to people and businesses who also want to see these communities thrive. All projects they get involved with must meet a strict criteria that ensures it will benefit families and communities. James Arkell has been involved with CHWC for a number of years and recently joined the CHWC board. Both James and Lamar are big supporters and believers in the work being done at CHWC. We thank them gratefully for their partnership.

Fun at the farm!

Summer is coming to an end, but we are still having a blast at Splitlog Farm.

The last "Art in the Park" day for the summer of 2014 took place July 30th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Since 2010 CHWC has been offering ART CLASSES on neighborhood street corners, community gardens, Waterway Park, and for the last class of the summer we moved to our new location - ART on the FARM - at 1045 Splitlog Ave in KCK. This was the last class of the summer but we will be back next summer and we will be hosting ART on the FARM every week starting in June. Come out today and see the new location

Three quick, easy DIY home repair tips from our construction crew:

Loose toilet?

Better take care of that rocking throne; the last thing you want is an out-of-commission toilet with a house full of company. First, check the closet bolts holding the bowl to the floor. If they're loose, hand-tighten them, then give them an additional quarter-turn with a wrench. If they're already tight, steady the toilet by slipping some plastic plumbers' shims into the gap where the bowl meets the floor. You'll find these useful wedges in plumbing-supply stores and the plumbing aisles at home centers.

Wimpy Shower?

If your shower power just ain't what it used to be, the showerhead could be clogged with mineral deposits. No need to replace it, though. Gently unscrew it from the pipe and soak it overnight in vinegar. Then wrap new Teflon tape clockwise around the pipe threads and turn the head back into place

Loose Chair Legs?

To prevent mishaps, take out any loose stretchers (the horizontal pieces that run between the legs) and scrape off the old glue with a knife. Apply a slow-setting epoxy, and lash everything together with a band clamp around the legs. Wipe up drips with vinegar. Take the clamps off the next day when the epoxy has cured.
