Building on 45 Years of Success

Over the past four decades, VGIF has supported more than 475 projects in 89 countries around the world, mobilizing resources for grassroots groups working to advance the human rights, economic capacities and social status of women in local communities.

In preparation for our 45th anniversary, we have embarked on an exciting effort to look back on our extensive grantmaking to assess the impact of VGIF funding, strengthen our monitoring and evaluation systems, and learn from our work and the work of our grantees. This undertaking is part of a broader effort to build the organization’s capacity and expand our future grantmaking so that we can be more responsive to the needs of our grantees.

A look back at VGIF’s four-decades of work shows how much we have developed, as we responded to the widespread changes in women's lives and realities across the globe.  As we look ahead to the future, we see great potential for our continued growth. The organization’s first grants in the 1970’s were made to support college graduates across the globe to advance women’s education, leadership skills, research efforts, and community development goals. VGIF’s early grants served women in diverse settings, from the United States and Western Europe to developing economies and lower income countries. During the first 15 years of grantmaking, VGIF funded more than 40 projects serving an estimated 1,400 women.  Through this time, VGIF was almost entirely volunteer-driven, with a network of generous Board Members and supporters to carry out our work.

Since those early years, VGIF’s grantmaking has increased tremendously. From 1970-2013, VGIF invested close to 2.4 million USD to support projects designed to advance gender equality and improve the lives of women and girls in local communities. These projects reached more than 215,000 women and girls and 324,000 people overall. While our grantmaking has grown exponentially and we have developed new systems and a growing staff, VGIF has stayed close to its roots. Our grantmaking still rests on the goal of supporting women leaders to define their own strategies, develop their own solutions for local problems, and improve their own lives and that of their families and communities. Our funding for community change and has spanned broadly across topic areas identified as important issues by the grantees themselves.
