Your life doesn't have to stay on repeat. You can change outcomes, actions, and circumstances by the way you think.
I was gazing out at the Atlantic Ocean in Biarritz, France after a humbling surf session avec mon mari et mon beau-frère. We had flown to this beautiful southwest town early in the morning and wasted no time on our first day of vacation. At 10pm, I was shivering as I peeled off my wet suit and waited for the guys to come out of the water.
I started thinking about how many people believe that if something happens a certain way, it will always happen that way. That it will never change because it has "always happened that way."
This spans so many different topics in our lives:
- "I'm going to get sick on the plane because I did last time."
- "I'll never lose weight because WeightWatchers didn't work."
- "I'll never trust a doctor again because one gave me the wrong medication."
- "I choked while negotiating with a new client so I'm not taking anymore calls."
Just because it happened one way before does not mean it will happen that way again. There is a reason for the good old falling off a horse analogy. Whether you had an embarrassing moment, crazy client, motion sickness, or a boyfriend who treated you like crap does NOT mean that will all repeat itself.
The only way it will repeat itself is if you let it. If you're scared to open up in a new relationship because you got burned in the past, then you're not going to get very far in the new one. If you don't think you can ever enjoy exercising or be able to fit it in your schedule because it didn't work before, then you won't.
Those thoughts are holding you back. That's all they are...thoughts that aren't you. As it turns out, YOU can do whatever you think you can do. And you can't do what you think you can't. Your life doesn't have to stay on repeat.
