Partners' Forum Opens in Johannesburg
More than 800 leaders and public health experts from around the world opened a landmark two-day meeting in Johannesburg to review new data and call for accelerated action to improve maternal, newborn and child health.
The 2014 Partners' Forum was opened by Graça Machel, Chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and African Ambassador for Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed, who is making her first public appearance since the end of her mourning period after the death of her husband, Nelson Mandela.

Be Seen! Be Heard! Youth at the 3rd PMNCH Partners’ Forum

Out of the approximately 1,000 participants here in Johannesburg, nearly 10% are youth representatives under 30. This is a great start, and a clear opportunity to increase meaningful youth engagement in the forum and others like it. Will PMNCH consider including a youth constituency to its other seven constituencies while mainstreaming youth within and throughout? We really hope so.
About 100 youth delegates met at a Pre-Forum event at the Partners Forum to discuss maternal, newborn and child health and recommendations for the post-2015 agenda.
The Partners' Forum gives us a wonderful opportunity to join leaders and stakeholders in discussing a strategic vision for reproductive, neonatal, and child health (RMNCH) in the post-2015 era. In addition to the phenomenal presentations given "on the stage," we also are adding a new dimension, inspired by the Social Good Summit, to the Forum's plenaries: keynote listening.
Each plenary, we will feature a keynote listener, using the hashtag #PMNCHLive. Rather than simply live-tweeting the plenary, our keynote listener will interact with the conversation and reflect on the discussion from his or her own point of view.

While a majority of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are struggling to meet the Millennium Development Goal 4 and 5 of reducing child mortality and improving maternal health, in 2012 ten countries with similar resources were on the “fast-track” of achieving the targets, notes a June 30, 2014 Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, WHO report.
