World Refugee Day is a day to raise awareness about the millions of refugees and displaced persons in the world. The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada acknowledges the impact that war and conflict has on the lives of refugees, and values the importance of family reunification. The Association is proud to be a small part of the resettlement of refugees.

This year the Canadian Council for Refugees is asking communities across Canada to walk in support of refugees, and to work together to create a compassionate, comprehensive, accurate conversation about refugees in Canada.

3) "The Master’s Wife” Comes to the Stage

June 28 - 2:00pm
July 2 July 9, July 16, July 23, July 30, Aug 6 - 7:30pm

Like the Charlottetown Conference, Andrew Macphail first saw the light of day in 1864, on November 24th. But unlike the Conference, his great memoir, The Master’s Wife, an account of his upbringing in Orwell, has fallen into relative obscurity. Although it has been praised by literary critic Janice Kulik Keefer as “one of the finest pieces of prose” to be found in Maritime or Canadian literature, few Islanders are acquainted with it.

That’s about to change.

The idea germinated two years ago with a staged reading at the Macphail Homestead under the title “An Evening with The Master’s Wife.” The audience response was emphatic; and the new, more ambitious version is the result. Entitled “The Master’s Wife: A Theatrical Celebration,” the 2014 production will also be rich in music, both sacred and secular. Sir Andrew’s father, William McPhail, was a fine musician who led the singing in the local Macdonaldite church near Orwell. He also taught music, writing out the notes on the backs of large scrolls of wallpaper, many of which have survived. Nancy Whytock has studied this “wallpaper music”, and she and several friends will perform bits of it throughout the play.

The production will also feature fiddle music by the fine Island performer Roy Johnstone. In the chapter entitled “The Musicians,” Sir Andrew writes about local fiddler Pat Bolger, and a remarkable musical duel he had with Donald beag, an itinerant labourer who’d received considerable classical-violin training in his youth. Roy performs for both of these characters.

The Master’s Wife will open on June 28th at 2:00pm in the Orwell Historic Village Hall, and then run Wednesday evenings until early August at 7:30pm, followed by a tour of community halls around the Island in late September and early October.
To get tickets call 651-8515 or 651-2789 or e-mail tjl@eastlink.ca or click here for more information.

6) PEIBWA E-News

Highlight:
In their recent e-newsletter, the PEI Business Women's Association highlighted Canada's Anti-Spam Law that comes into effect on July 1, 2014.

The information is very detailed so they have compiled a guideline to help businesses, organizations, and non-profits have a sense on how to comply.

CASL: Canada’s Anti-SPAM Legislation Guidelines
If you’re emailing or messaging people in Canada, you must have their express permission to do so (or valid implied consent).  The legislation is lengthy and complex, so we’ve compiled a guideline to the key components and information
you need to comply. The Act will begin to take effect on July 1, 2014 when most of the Act comes into force.
