The Ideas Soirée: "Strengthening of the Tax Base" with Amaresh Singh
This talk will examine how Australia's taxation models and protocols could serve as templates to help India overcome the deficiencies that plague the structure and administration of its tax system. As India attempts to widen and deepen its tax base, this cross-cultural analysis will suggest new policy models to help build a direct-tax regime, using enhanced information technology to avoid intrusion.

Amaresh Singh will present his oration on Tuesday the 24th of June at 5:30PM at the Australia India Institute Seminar Room, 147-149 Barry Street Carlton VIC 3053

The Ideas Soirée: "The Curious Case of Farmers Rights in India" with Rajashree Chandra

Before the inception of breeders’ rights, there was no claim that existed as farmers’ rights (FRs). In a way, FRs have emerged as a counter to breeders’ rights in a hasty attempt to also recognise farmers’ claims as producers, consumers and conservers. What protection mechanisms and notions of ownership does this  advance? Do farmers rights’ protect farmers, ensure their access, and enable them to compete with breeders’ rights? Are juridical statements of rights an adequate replacement for the customary protection that farmers enjoyed? These will be some of the questions that will be raised in Dr Chandra's talk.

Rajashree Chandra will present her oration on Thursday the 26th of June at 5:30pm at the Australia India Institute Seminar Room, 147-149 Barry Street Carlton VIC 3053.

Tiffin Talk: “It's Not Curry; Eating India --The Penguin Food Guide to India”The inevitable sameness of dishes served in Indian restaurants across Australia erroneously suggests that India has a homogenous national cuisine. In fact, India’s  culinary landscape is so varied and finely nuanced across its many regions and communities that it makes up the world’s most diverse cuisine.

While the endless combinations of flavours and texture produced by Indian cooks afford sensual delights, the considered exploration of the country’s regional cuisines also offers a route to understanding the complex geography, social, cultural and human landscape of historical and contemporary India. In this aptly named ‘Tiffin Talk',  Charmaine O’Brien, author of The Penguin Food Guide to India, will take you inside India’s kitchens to create an intimate and illuminating portrait of the Indian nation.

Ms O’Brien will speak on Thursday the 10th of July in the Upstairs Seminar Room, Australia India Institute, 147-149 Barry St, Carlton, VIC 3053

Fearless Nadia: Autumn 2014
The Australia India Institute is pleased to announce the latest edition of our 'Fearless Nadia Papers'. Be sure to read Harsh Shrivastava's  'Communication Laws and Regulations to Citizens: Lessons from Australia'. The paper argues that government departments should devote specialised staff and financial resources to communicating the laws, rules and regulations they are charged with administering. As Mr Shrivastava says: "Good policy, poorly communicated, is not good policy."
Boost: Youth Social Action Within and Beyond India
Despite the role of young people as energetic, active and creative agents of social transformation around the world, there is a critical lack of qualitative research into their everyday social activities.

Speaker Craig Jeffrey , Professor of Development Geography at the University of Oxford, will examine this gap in our knowledge by considering young people (aged 16-30) as facilitators of social change. He will share the insights generated by his qualitative research, conducted across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh with Dr. Jane Dyson, into educated youth from ‘marginalised’ backgrounds. He will discuss how and why these young people are enhancing the capabilities of subordinated sections of society and how policymakers might work better with this crucial group.

Professor Jeffrey will deliver his talk on Thursday the 24th of July from 6.00 to 7.00pm at Lecture Theatre 1, FBE Building, 111, Barry Street, Carlton VIC 3053
