Dear <<First Name>>,
Summer is here, and so is your Summer Newsletter from me. Below you can read about change in my clinic hours, my holiday schedule, the science behind BodyTalk, my recent trip to Rwanda, a presentation on female sexuality and various other health related tidbits.
The planning of the
Yoga and Access retreat in Kent 4-6 July is going well. I had a meeting with our chef, Sophy Garner, yesterday to discuss the menu. She brought along some healthy fudge for me to try, and it was absolutely delicious. I can assure you that you will be in for a treat. There are still a few spaces left, but be
quick.
It’s a Jungle in There
In May I had the chance to do some further training with the founder of BodyTalk, Dr. John Veltheim. He wrote and developed this course with the molecular biologist and BodyTalk Instructor, Laura Stuve. Laura has worked in genetic research for 25 years (for example as part of the Human Genome project at Stanford University) before she decided to pursue practicing and teaching BodyTalk full time. The course is called BodyEcology, and it is about the mechanisms of the jungle of microbes we host in our bodies.
Microbes have excised 2.5 billion years before the first multicellular creatures evolved and there are tens of thousands different species. We each have over a thousand different microbes in and on our bodies in our own unique combination. In our gut alone there are about 1 kilogram of bugs that amongst other things help us absorb nutrients from our food.
It is a hugely interesting and rapidly evolving field of science, which has only really taken off the last five years or so due to development in new technology that allows DNA profiling of the various microbes. Previously they have been very hard to study.
While better sanitation and antibiotics have saved countless lives, the pendulum had swung too far in the direction of being at war with germs. We are now paying the prices for that with soaring high numbers of allergies, inflammatory and auto-immune conditions, asthma, antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria etc. What is emerging is a much more nuanced picture of our microbiom as an ecosystem that needs to be carefully balanced and where microbes feed of each other and help us absorb nutrients, stay mentally balanced, keep energy levels up, and have a strong immune system. There is a lot more to this than remembering our daily Yakult!
BodyTalk provides us with a unique opportunity to work directly with the microbes, and the results I have seen in the clinic the last month while working with this material have been remarkable. I am very pleased to have these new tools and strategies for addressing allergies, auto-immune disorders, inflammations, mental disorders, digestive problems, gynaecological problems, skin complaints etc.
Keep well,
tap your cortices every day and have an amazing summer,
