Ministry Teams—Back to the Future

Our church is moving from a structure of elected boards to Ministry Teams. Those Ministry Teams are appointed to lead, perform and evaluate ministry.

As we thought about the Ministry Teams, it is really a return to how our church operated in its earliest days. We had teams of people who led ministry areas. In 1955, we had five boards and a few staff. In 2015, we will have more than twenty Ministry Teams to work with many staff. Many more people will be involved on the Ministry Teams than in our prior board structure. We might call this “Back to the Future!”

Bylaw changes were approved at the May 2014 church election and as part of that, we have until May 2015 to move from boards (Deacon, Missions, Music, Trustee and Christian Education) to Ministry Teams. The good news is that we have ten months remaining to do this—the challenge is that we only have ten months remaining to do this!

What is a Ministry Team?

A Ministry Team will have 3–8 people who are committed to a common purpose. We see three A’s as a guideline for Ministry Teams: Aligned with EvFree’s mission and values; Accountable for the accomplishment of the team’s charter; and Action-oriented—working and meeting regularly to carry the weight of ministry.

Who will lead these Ministry Teams?

Team Leaders will be paid or unpaid leaders in the church. The team leader is responsible for recruiting team members and securing their appointment. The leader will set the roles on the team. He or she will develop and empower team members. The leader is also responsible for the ongoing spiritual and relational health of the team, along with regular reporting of actions, decisions and budget.

Who will be on these Ministry Teams?

Appointed team members must agree to the team charter and sign the deacon-level leadership covenant. The members will commit to meeting together for one calendar year, with eligibility for continued appointment. New team members are not required to be church members but they must become a member within one year.

Transition Plan

Our proposed governance changes were communicated to the congregation from February through April 2014. Members voted and approved the Bylaw changes in May 2014. The transition to the current system will happen from May 2014 to April 2015. From May to July of this year, the Ministry Teams will be identified. From August to December, the Ministry Teams will begin to operate, in conjunction with the existing boards. Boards will meet twice, or as needed, in this time period. By January 2015, the Ministry Teams will be fully empowered and boards will meet only as needed. As of May 2015, the Ministry Teams will be fully functional and boards will cease to exist. We have plenty of work to do to implement these changes!

They had a great idea of congregational teamwork in 1955. We are updating and expanding some of the elements of that teamwork. So it’s fair to say that for our 60th Anniversary in 2015, we are going “Back to the Future” with Ministry Teams.
