In 1826, John Quincy Adams is President of the United States; Thomas Jefferson dies on the Fourth of July; Charles X ruled France; George IV was King of England. In the town of Gardner, Massachusetts brothers began to make chairs in a shed on their father’s farm, calling their company Haywood Brothers. Heywood Wakefield was established in 1921.

The company produced furniture in the late 19th century. The styles drew on the Aesthetic Movement and Japanese influences; later, simpler designs drew from the Arts and Crafts Movement. Heywood Wakefield furniture was exhibited at the 1933 Century of Progress exhibition and at the 1964 New York World's Fair During the 1930s and 1940s Heywood-Wakefield began producing furniture using designs based on French Art Deco. The pair of American mid-century solid maple square side tables at epoca are shapely and sleek drawn from Asian and art deco influences.
