1) Revised Gender and IWRM Tutorial.

We are pleased to announce the release of the newly revised Gender and IWRM tutorial! Seven years ago, Cap-Net UNDP and GWA produced a self-learning tutorial aimed at water professionals that would demonstrate the benefits of including gender considerations in water management planning and practices. It intended to show how addressing gender would improve efficiency of water use and environmental sustainability.

This new edition contains new developments, new insights and recently developed processes. In this version, the ‘how’ question is addressed more thoroughly, as it includes various tools, case studies, and references to useful websites and literature on promising practices, as well as examples of evidence of impact. There is also a Quick Guide at the beginning of the tutorial.

GWA and Cap-Net UNDP guarantee its suitability for technical water managers, who aim for their work to benefit people of different backgrounds: poor and better off; rural and urban; majorities and minorities; differently abled and vulnerable women, children and men.

You can download the revised popular version of Gender and IWRM tutorial here.
The full resource document will be available on our website soon.

4) IWRM ToolBox training for MSc in IWRM and Water Resources Engineering and Management Students – 15 to 17 June 2014, Kariba-Zimbabwe.

The IWRM ToolBox training which took place in Kariba, Zimbabwe from 15 to 17 of June 2014, was a collaboration between Global Water Partnership-Southern Africa (GWPSA) based in Pretoria (South Africa) and WaterNet based in Harare (Zimbabwe). The training was an outcome of GWP-SA and WaterNet’s shared strategic goal to develop capacity in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region aimed to expose Masters students of the IWRM and Water Resources Engineering and Management (WREM) programmes to the IWRM ToolBox.  It is expected that the students will further familiarise themselves with the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) ToolBox and utilise it in their daily work, and share their experiences with other professionals involved in water resources management by submitting case studies and references.  The training was attended by 17 students from five SADC countries: Malawi (3), Namibia (1), The United Republic of Tanzania (1), Zambia and Zimbabwe (12).

5) Promoting Integrity and Accountability in the Water Sector for Anti-Corruption Commission Regional Training Workshop - 30 June to 4 July 2014, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Water Integrity training for Anti-Corruption Agencies in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region on promoting integrity and accountability in the water sector was held between the 30th of June and the 4th of July 2014 in South Africa. The training was attended by 23 participants drawn from 9 Southern African countries. This course was one of a series rolled out until June 2015, targeting water sector stakeholders at regional and national levels. The course was implemented by SADC Water Division with funding from the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) with Cap-Net UNDP and WaterNet being the executing agencies. The aim of the training was to create awareness and to familiarise participants with the Water Integrity Training Manual, its tools, mechanisms and approaches to strengthen integrity, accountability and transparency in the water sector.

Dr. Kenneth Msibi the Water Policy & Strategy Expert at SADC Secretariat officially opened the training workshop. In his remarks, Dr. Msibi expressed the SADC region commitment towards water integrity and thanked anti-corruption agencies in the region for participating in the training.

The seven topics in the manual that were presented and discussed were as follows;
a) Introduction to Water Governance and Institutions
b) Corruption in the Water Sector
c) Identifying Corruption Risks
d) Anti-corruption Laws, Institutions and Instruments
e) Transparency and Access to Information
f) Accountability in the Water Sector
g) Integrity in Integrated Water Resources Management

The workshop was closed by Dr Jean-Marie Kileshye-Onema, the WaterNet Manager who also awarded certificates to the participants.

6) Regional Knowledge Exchange Workshop: The GWP Toolbox and Other Strategic Aspects GWPSA - WaterNet Collaboration. 12-13 July 2014, Durban- South Africa.

WaterNet actively took part in Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) organised in Durban, South Africa between the 12th and 13th July 2014. The workshop theme was "Regional Knowledge Exchange Workshop: The GWP ToolBox and Other Strategic Aspects GWPSA - WaterNet Collaboration".

The objectives of the workshop were:

a) To provide an overview of GWP’s Knowledge Management strategic thrust and seek input from participants on the GWP IWRM ToolBox (use, value, improvements, institutionalisation/uptake and local case study contributions);
b) To strengthen the GWPSA-WaterNet partnership on ‘Research for Development’ – at all levels; and
c) To strengthen the GWPSA-WaterNet partnership on Professional Capacity development (in particular – decision makers at local, national, transboundary and regional levels).

The workshop was attended by GWPSA partners and WaterNet members. Both Ms. Ruth Beukman of GWPSA and Dr. Jean-Marie Kileshye-Onema of WaterNet highlighted the need for continuous coordinated efforts by GWPSA and WaterNet in Southern Africa in the area of IWRM as working in isolation does not result in addressing water related challenges.

13) Water Video of the Month.

'Water Hidden in 1 T-Shirt' by the Water Channel

Are your clothes already wet when you buy them? Yes, they are!

Cotton is the most widely used natural fibre in the textile industry but its production has a major impact on water depletion and quality. Cotton is often grown and processed in arid regions outside of Europe where water is taken from rivers to grow cotton in places with naturally dry climates.

It's easy to reduce your water footprint by simply buying fewer t-shirts or by replacing cotton clothes with clothes made from artificial fibres. Every time you wear an item of clothing you are improving its water efficiency so try to wear clothes as many times as possible before throwing them out. When you do dispose of them take them to your local recycling centre.

1 T-shirt = 2495 litres = flushing the toilet 250 times
Assumptions:
- T-shirt made of 100% cotton, weighing 250 g
- flushing the toilet = 10 litres
