Survey Says: Summer Learning Gains Ground
(Afterschool Alliance) New research from the 2014 edition of America After 3PM, the most comprehensive household survey of how students in America spend their after school hours, shows that summer learning programs are strongly supported by parents and that participation in summer learning programs is on the rise. In October, look for the release of the 2014 edition of America After 3PM which will provide a detailed view of afterschool, including access to STEM learning opportunities, physical activity, and healthy meals and snacks in afterschool.

Afterschool Matters
There is a link between afterschool programs and the narrowing gap in math achievement. Researcher Dr. Deborah Lowe Vandell and her colleagues at the University of California-Irvine School of Education discovered that consistent participation in afterschool activities in elementary school can help close the gap in math achievement between low-income and high-income children by grade 5. Unfortunately, the lack of participation in an afterschool program is linked to behavior problems, poor attendance and lower grades. Read more here.

Call for Conference Reviewers
The APOST Bi-Annual Conference Fall session will be here before we know it! The conference is a professional development symposium that shares best practices in youth development and is open to youth practitioners to increase their skills in working with youth.
