Tonight in Sportsball, Major League Baseball is set to honor Glenn Burke, baseball pioneer, who had the distinction of being the first out ex-baseball player in 1982, at their All-Star game. Billy Bean, another out ex-player, will also be honored. At the same time, the MLB will make a "major announcement" regarding homophobia in baseball, which will "dramatically shift their ability to combat homophobia and help gay players, coaches and staff in the League," according to Cyd Zeigler of Outsports. Congrats, Major League Baseball!
Over in Belgium, Petra De Sutter has become the first openly transgender Member of Parliament following the recent elections there. She is the second openly transgender MP in all of Europe and the third in the world. Professor De Sutter is the head of the Reproductive Medicine Department of the University Hospital Ghent as well as an associated professor of gynecology at the University of Ghent. Congratulations, Professor De Sutter, on your achievements!
When Pennsylvania's anti-gay marriage ban fell in court a few weeks back, no one was sure whether or not Tom Corbett, the republican governor of the great state of Pennsylvania, would appeal the ruling and continue to fight it in court. Surprisingly, he conceded that it would be an incredible waste of time, energy, and money. Now, whether he did it after realizing all of the above was correct or if he did so because he's facing a difficult reelection battle, who's to say? Either way, gay marriage is legal in Pennsylvania, and it's a good thing. Enter Theresa Santai-Gaffney, Schulylkill County Clerk. Ms. Santai-Gaffney believes that whole line about something something combine religion and state* (*only the religion of Jesus, mind you, and NOTHING ELSE EVER, and not any fake Jesus who doesn't want to smite those homosexuals) and has filed petitions to act as a defender of man-woman only marriage. So far, the judge who ruled in the gay marriage case denied her petition to act as defense in the case, and so did the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which barred her from the case and simultaneously dismissed her appeal. Undeterred, Ms. Santai-Gaffney then appealed to the Supreme Court, specifically to Samuel Alito (the SC Justice who oversees her district) under the notion that the SC has already put other state rulings on hold pending appeal, so why not this one? I'll tell you why not this one, Theresa -- THERE. IS. NO. APPEAL. YOU. ARE. BARRED. FROM. APPEALING. JUST. STOP. Surprisingly, Alito denied Santai-Gaffney's appeal, and Pennsylvania joins many other states with marriage equality. Congratulations, Theresa Santai-Gaffney, on being the worst person in Pennsylvania.
