GATHER BALTIMORE
Opportunity for Gleaning

Gather Baltimore is the volunteer-based program, created by OSI fellow Arthur Gray Morgan, that collects unsold vegetables, fruit, and bread from the Baltimore Farmers’ Market in downtown Baltimore and other sources for redistribution to local meal programs, faith communities, and others in need.  Literally tons of food that would otherwise go to waste is reclaimed from markets, farms, and distributors to become part of nourishing meals and snacks in low-income communities and food pantries around Baltimore.

Gather Baltimore also organizes groups to glean fields at area farms and makes the produce available at 'farm stands' in areas of the city where there is little or no access to fresh produce.

Please let us know if you are interested in spending a few hours this summer or fall helping to gather vegetables left in the fields.  Besides the obvious benefit to others, you’ll be enjoying fresh country air, exercise, and companionship with fellow pickers.  Some fields are gleaned on weekdays and others on weekends.  Please contact Karen Bovie at
kbovie@gmail.com or Linnea Anderson at landersonpr@yahoo.com with your name and contact information.  Indicating an interest does not mean you’ll be expected to show up for every event—we’ll simply make you aware of opportunities and you can sign up or not as your schedule allows.

From the Social Action Clearinghouse:
Summer Homeless Neighbors Outreach

Although spring started off cooler than usual, it won't be long before Baltimore's summer heat and humidity impact the lives of our neighbors living in shelters and on the streets.  So that First Unitarian can help, please check your closets and dresser drawers for clean used summer clothing.  We're especially looking for shorts and tee shirts, white socks and underwear, sunglasses, visors, suntan lotion and packaged lip balm.  You can drop off your donations at the SAC table during coffee hour.

On behalf of our homeless neighbors, we thank you for your generosity!

Take It All Off This Summer

It is finally happening.  We will be removing the carpet on the chancel.   The dates will be Thursday, July 10, Friday, July 11, Saturday, July 12 with Saturday, July 19 as a add-on date. In addition to removing the old carpet from the chancel and the candle room, we will also be moving the pulpit and adding a railing to the chancel steps. This is your chance to make our sanctuary more beautiful and useable. What could be more fun?
We will work from 10:00 am to around 3:00 p.m. each day.  Please join us when your schedule will allow.  Come for the day or for a few hours.  Please bring your own gloves.  Wear work clothes because this is hot and dirty work. We will have tools, but if you have tools that you like to use, bring them along. Water and snacks will be provided. Please contact Judy Mayer at jamayer@verizon.net to sign up or if you have questions. See you in July!

Update on UUSC Spring Chocolate Sales & Membership

Thanks to all who purchased chocolate and updated your membership status in Spring 2014.  We sold over $400.00 worth of chocolate and earned a percentage of the sales for the General Fund.  Also, our church has 64 individual memberships in the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), 29% of our church membership.   For the third year in a row, our church is an Honor Congregation and a Creating Justice Banner Society member in UUSC.  We are living our UU values!!!  Marianne Freedman and Roberta Van Meter, UUSC Coordinators
