This Week: Using Social Media

You've definitely heard of it and might even have your own pages, but are you using social media platforms to your advantage when it comes to your business?

What are the advantages to using social media to market my company?

Here is a useful infographic with all of the info you need. If you don't feel like clicking through, it basically says that if you're not using anything, you're missing out.

What websites would be best for a furniture store? How should I use them?

It's much better to have a few well-maintained pages than a ton of pages you never update. Since this is the case, here are a few sites that would be best for this industry:

Facebook (Here is Raymour & Flanigan's page)

This website is by far the biggest social media site, with over 1 billion profiles worldwide. Users can post photos, statuses, videos, and share links on their profiles. Your biggest concern, however, will be getting people to "like" your page and stay connected once they do.

Your content needs to provide value, or people will "un-like" your page or hide it from their Newsfeed. For example, instead of just posting the picture of an item, you could ask people what they think of it or give tips on the best way to clean it. Pictures and questions are proven to keep people interested and engaged. Facebook exclusive sales are also a good way to make your "fans" feel special and are an incentive for them to act. If you're ever afraid that your content is getting stale, just think of what you would like to see a company post if you liked their page.

Facebook's biggest asset is allowing you to interact with your customers (and potential customers) instantly and in front of the public eye. If a user posts on your page, even with a complaint, be sure to respond. This is your chance to show off your customer service skills.

Pinterest (Here's Raymour & Flanigan again)

While this website is less known than Facebook, it's demographic and use is perfect for a furniture store. It is also one of the fastest growing sites in history and does better in ecommerce than Facebook. If you want to sell things, this is the place to be.

Users on Pinterest "pin" an item to a themed "board" (see Raymour & Flanigan's page for some examples). Most people on the site are looking for something to buy or something they wish they could own. Take advantage of this by showing off your own products, and organize them onto different boards to make it easier to find. People on this site are looking at everything based on visual aesthetics, so be sure to use your best pictures and organize by visual qualities, such as style or color.

When "pinning" an image, be sure to always include a link back to your website. If you have an online store, link it to that. While using this platform to show off your products is important, generating traffic should always be a top priority.

Twitter (Raymour & Flanigan once again)

This website is good for quick messages, pictures, and links to other posts. Every "tweet" can contain up to 140 characters, but you can link to full posts on your website or Facebook. Think of it as posting just the headline of a story.

Twitter, like Facebook, is also a good way to communicate with your customers quickly and visibly. One brand that is particularly good at communicating with its "followers" is Taco Bell. Even though they are obviously selling something different than you are, they were able to capture the spirit of their brand, and many people who don't even like Taco Bell follow them on Twitter.

One other good use for Twitter is following other important people and companies in your industry. Some examples would be interior designers, furniture manufacturers, and your competition. If someone posts something that would be valuable to your customers, you can always "retweet" it, which will also show to your customers that you are an active part of the furniture industry.

I suggest having all of these pages to reach out to as many potential customers as possible, but if you feel like it would be too difficult to maintain, be sure to at least have a Facebook page. Always update regularly (at least once a day or every 2 days), always reply, and customers will want to connect with your company.
