Modern Art in Balboa Park
“Reading through the names of San Diego Art Prize winners is the fastest way to introduce yourself to the city's most interesting artists,” said San Diego’s CityBeat. Our 2014 show, heading to San Diego’s Balboa Park Nov. 6-9, will be no exception. We’ll be hosting a slate of the most intriguing international and US-based artists this year, and we’d love for you to meet them.
ART SAN DIEGO Spotlight:
Mark Vassallo,
Photographer
Award-winning photographer Mark Vassallo says his approach to photographing flowers is similar to that of portrait photography. Born in London, Vassallo now lives and works in Tokyo. His works have been shown extensively and are held in numerous private and public collections. Says the Tokyo-based artist:
“Each flower has her own distinctive character and temperament and is in constant dynamic motion. I observe and continuously shoot the flowers from bud to blossom over the course of several days. They open to the warmth and close to shy away from cold, turning and stretching always toward the light until they eventually give up their petals."

Contemporary Art in the Heart of Miami
In December, we hope to see you at SPECTRUM Miami, coming to the Wynwood Art District December 3-7. Last year’s show featured “a hefty crowd of local and international artists and art enthusiasts,” according to What’sUpMiami, a popular arts blog.
SPECTRUM Miami Spotlight:
Marie-Josée Bergeron,
Painter, Mixed Media Artist
Marie-Josée Bergeron is a highly influential presence in her home province of Quebec, Canada, and Montreal. She has won multiple awards for her work and is influential in organizing shows and promoting the arts in Montreal. She says:
“I am constantly looking for textures to feed my work. Bark, paper, metal, stone, wood, fabrics… I see the canvas as a surface and not as a framework where an image predominates. What interests me is the flatness of a “playground.” It becomes an excuse to experiment with the material, which is a completely intuitive and spontaneous process."
