Zettelkasten Project News

Website Tools

The Zettelkasten website got a huge update: I created an overview to show battle-tested tools which can be used as Zettelkasten note archives. Take a look at the Tools page.

I have a lot of application reviews on the stack, yet I need more reviews to justify recommending them. I added my reviews of nvALT and Slip Box for Mac already, and a friend of mine has a DEVONthink review in the making. Then there are the other kinds of applications you will need for a full-fledged writing workflow – think about reference managers, outliners, and writing applications. The tools section of the website will grow over time, that's for sure.

Naturally, I can't test each and every app myself. It takes a lot of time to do it right, and I don't even have access to a Windows computer to try software for that operating system.

If you want to contribute and write about your experience using an application, you're very welcome! Everyone will benefit from these resources, and I'd like to collect our combined experience in one place to make the discovery easy.

Got an idea? I'd love to chat: drop me a line at hi@christiantietze.de

Book Progress

I'm still working towards completing the “Building Blocks” chapter of the book. I had hoped to be faster, I admit, but I make steady progress. My software development project consumed a lot of time, and I'm only about to find a new schedule and rhythm to write more.

I created an online spreadsheet which shows my book progress, so you can take a look over my shoulder. The spreadsheet will be updated automatically.

Tracking can be a great tool to motivate yourself and become more efficient. I never had such a big writing project before, though, so everything's still in a phase of experimentation. Read more about this in my related blog post, How to Track Writing Progress.

If you feel stuck or overwhelmed by your writing projects, take a look at the book "How to Write a Lot" by Paul J. Silvia. He shows pragmatic techniques to begin writing and keep a regular schedule so you can meet deadlines and accomplish more than the average. In hindsight, I wonder why I needed Paul's encouragement in the first place, because his tips are so simple.

On Writing

My last post on being a writer received some attention. I talk about making a shift in your identity, and how to manifest the change and create lasting habits.

As I continue writing the Zettelkasten book, I wanted to find out how to become more efficient at writing itself. In most of my Zettelkasten-related blog posts I talk about concern research, taking notes, and managing references. The actual writing is still like a black box. I am still experimenting here myself so I don't want to become an imposter, faking guru writing knowledge.

Being a software developer, I countered this problem with technology. I'm tracking the overall book progress in a spreadsheet already to see at a glance how far the project's progressed. Now I developed a tool to track my overall output on a day-to-day basis, because counting your words is useful to become a better writer.

To do this day-to-day tracking, I developed an app for Mac. I'm happy to announce that I released the Word Counter for Mac last week. It's for sale right now until I added the analysis features to the app.

Thanks to all of you who applied as testers earlier this year!

Your feedback is very welcome!

Thanks for your attention. As a bonus, here’re some articles I found interesting as of late.

Status of the Community

As of late, there were interesting conversations going on in the comments on my blog. I am glad I added the functionality to leave comments. Some of my favorite posts in respect to comment engagement and stuff I learned from others over the past months were the following: Other blogs are slowly picking up the #Zettelkasten tag. I hope to include pieces by other authors in the next issue!

A quick reminder: consider writing an article about your favorite Zettelkasten software or submit existing ones to the index so others can more easily decide which applications fit their needs.

What about you?

Finally, I'd like to ask you the following question:
