4YP – how it all began
From Brian Keeble, retired Consultant in Public Health Medicine and Chairman of our Management Committee

The idea of 4YP first came about during a conference at Ipswich Hospital, way back in 1996.  It recognised that young people often found it difficult to move between different services when referred from one to another, and recommended that we establish a ‘one stop shop’ in one user friendly location.
Probably because I was the only person there who did not work in young people’s services, I was asked to chair the steering group that we set up to make the dream come true.
The steering group rapidly discovered two major problems: we didn’t have any money and, as professionals working in a variety of young people orientated services, most of us had busy day jobs, we didn’t have the time to get any.  We did, however, manage to get a modest donation from the NHS, which we used to fund a part time worker, whose job was to establish 4YP as a charity and go about seeking funds.
By about the turn of the millennium we had a stroke of luck when the Government set up the Healthy Living Centre Fund, using National Lottery money.  About two years later we learnt that we had been awarded a million pounds to establish our Centre in Ipswich.
In 2004 we finally opened the doors of 4YP in Lower Brook Street and started to realise the vision of that conference some 8 years earlier.
Over the last decade 4YP has expanded and changed, to some extent, with time but there is no doubt about its usefulness, or about the quality of what it does.  Those of us who have been associated with it from the start are enormously proud of it.

A warm welcome

Hello and welcome to all our newest volunteers, staff, supporters and, Trustees, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who continues to support us in various ways.

Winners of Suffolk High Sheriff’s ‘Youth Organisation of the Year 2014’ Award

We are delighted to have been awarded the Suffolk High Sheriff's ‘Youth Organisation of the Year Award’ 2014.
The award ceremony, celebrating the impact charities and volunteers make to the people and communities of Suffolk, was hosted by High Sheriff of Suffolk, Sir Edward Greenwell, at UCS in Ipswich on 02 April  2014.
This accolade is a true reflection of the value our vital services play in supporting the health and wellbeing of young people in the county.  Thank you to all staff, volunteers, and young people for your support.
Last year volunteers gave a fantastic 2,738 hours to support 4YP.

Keeping the Clothes Cupboard Coooool!!!

At 4YP we have a wide range of facilities available for young people.  Included in this is our clothes cupboard; an essential resource for some young people who access the Project.
They may need an extra layer or change of clothes suitable for the weather, or to wear while they’re making use of our laundry facilities, or to borrow a suit and shirt for job interviews.
We always need new clothing supplies to replace those borrowed or given away.  They don’t have to be new but must be in good condition, suitable for young people to wear.
If you have any items or want to donate a clothing store voucher please email us at enquiries@syphp.org.uk.

Stay Safe in the Sun

Over 8 out of 10 melanomas (skin cancer) in the UK are linked to too much exposure to the suns’ UV rays.
Help to protect yourself with these simple tips:
  • spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
  • wear a t-shirt, hat and sunglasses.
  • use a sunscreen with at least factor 15 and a high star rating. Use it generously and reapply regularly.

4YP Helps Make Suffolk the Greenest County

We are contributing to making Suffolk the greenest county and helping reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on paper use.
As a result, Strident Computer Systems Ltd, our service provider, has sponsored a tree in Ecuador through the World Land Trust on behalf of 4YP.

Have you heard the HYPE?

We are running an exciting new volunteer programme called ‘HYPED’ (Help Young People Embrace Difference).
Young People taking part have already been involved in many teambuilding activities and training opportunities.  They are playing a big part in consultation activities, reviewing and helping to shape the local services that impact on young people in Suffolk.
If you are interesting finding out more, or want to join the group, please contact Scarlett McMurtry on 01473 252607 or by email to scarlett.mcmurtry@syphp.org.uk

4YP Patron on the Podium with Team Archery GB

Following her break from training in 2013 for the 4YP Ipswich to Paris Bike Ride, our patron Nicky Hunt is having a busy year competing in world class archery.
Nicky told us that she has already “represented Great Britain at the first three world cups” this year, being Shanghai, Colombia, and Turkey.
The Archery GB team have made the top 8 twice and are soon to be off to the European championships in Armenia.
Nicky hopes to squeeze in another fundraiser for 4YP into her busy schedule – hosting a quiz for her Archery GB teammates.
People who do regular activities, such as walking fast, water aerobics, and riding a bike have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.

Support from the Garfield Weston Foundation

Basics such as light, heat, bin collection, rent, general maintenance, and administrative support are the foundations of the services we provide to support local young people.  Therefore, we are very grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation, which has awarded us a grant of £5,000 to help pay some of these costs in 2014-15.

Stephen Tackles the Great East Swim

Stephen swam a gruelling 2 miles in the Great East Swim on 21 June 2014.  Completing the circuit at Alton Water in just 1 hour and 33 minutes, Stephen raised over £100.  An incredible result.

Sunny Day to ‘Walk This Way’ for the Orwell Walk

Team 4YP, a group of our supporters, got out in the summer sunshine, fresh air, and a little bit of rain to walk between 13 and 25 miles each for the Orwell Walk at the end of June.
The team looked quite the part in their 4YP t-shirts, raising over £130 in the process.  Brilliant!
Team 4YP and Stephen would like to thank everyone who sponsored them.  4YP would also like to add our thanks.  For more information or to get involved yourself, visit our fundraising page awww.4yp.org.uk
