Holy Innocents, San Francisco - A Place Where All Are Welcome

Summer e-Newsletter, July 11 - July 25, 2014

This week’s birthday celebrations:
Friday, July 18 ~ Alfred Escoffier
Saturday, July 19 ~ Joan Curry
Tuesday, July 22 ~ David Johnstone
Thursday, July 24 ~ Christina Kane
                              Cary McCullough

Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase. Bless them and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them where they stand. Comfort them when discouraged or lonely. Raise them up when they fall, and in their hearts, may your peace that passes all understanding, abide with them for ever.  In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Sarah & Richard still need one more volunteer!
Sarah and Richard need more help in doing our weekly deposits!  The summer could be the perfect time to learn as we have just the one service.  Once trained, it takes about one hour on a Sunday afternoon (or even on a Monday or Tuesday) to count, copy, fill out spreadsheets and report to our bookkeeper, and then it takes just a few minutes out of your day to go to our bank for the actual deposit. They are looking for two official members of the congregation to assist in this task so that in a normal month of four Sundays, there would be one person for each Sunday.  See Sarah and Richard for more information!

NEWCOMER DINNER! July 18, 7:15pm

Newcomers Dinner:  Saying HI to New Faces
One of the many blessing at Holy Innocents is the number of new faces in our family every week.  As a casual way to welcome new members into the Holy Innocents family and breakdown what can seem like an overwhelming task of meeting new people, we are going to have periodic hosted dinners by some of the Holy Innocents established parishioners honoring our new faces.

Our first dinner will be Friday, July 18 at Richard Mullen & Natasha Merritt's home in Noe Valley.  This dinner for twelve will include six - eight new members and five - six established members for an evening of sharing, laughter and hospitality.

Have kids?  Bring'em as we will have a sitter and kids do not count against the total.

Care to join:
If you are new to Holy Innocents (since Jan 1, 2013)

The Gospel of Thomas - A voice suppressed now speaks again ~ with Tom Dipko, July 13 & 20, 10:45-11:30am
From 367 a.d. to 1945 a Gospel was buried, with other manuscripts, in a sealed jar in a cave in Nag Hammadi, Egypt.  It is likely that even the burial was a sign of disobedience -  the manuscripts were supposed to have been destroyed!  Among them was the Gospel of Thomas,  a collection of sayings attributed to Jesus.  Why were these texts regarded by church authorities as "dangerous?"  Can they teach us anything today about the struggle of the ancient church to discern a trustworthy witness to Jesus?  We will look at fifty of the sayings that are unique to this Gospel, i.e., not found in the four Gospels that made their way into the New Testament.  Come prepared for surprises and questions that await our attempt to discern the truth
.
