As sexual violence is an issue that impacts a significant number of individuals in our province, we hope you will want to continue to see what we are doing provincially to bring awareness of the issue and impact from sexual violence.
AASAS First Responder to Sexual Abuse and Sexual Assault Training
Professionals and other first responders across Alberta share a common responsibility in providing adequate and timely supports for victims who have been sexually abused and sexually assaulted. With a positive non-blaming approach, supportive and strategic placed questions and accurate information about available services and the law, first responders can act as bridges to much needed services that foster healing and create access to justice.
In 2011, AASAS identified a need for cross sector training and developed the ‘First Responder to Sexual Abuse and Sexual Assault’ two-day comprehensive adult education curriculum. This training outlines the knowledge and skills necessary for helping professionals to assess, screen and respond effectively to disclosures of sexual assault/abuse.
AASAS is currently working on building capacity with its Member Agencies to deliver this program more frequently and into more communities. Keep your eyes posted for information on First Responder workshops that will be offered in your community.

Lloydminster Sexual Assault & Information Centre (LSAIC):
LSAIC is hosting an AASAS First Responder Training on Tuesday September 9 and Wednesday September 10, 2014.
The goal of this workshop is to train “first responders” to effectively respond to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual abuse from children, youth and adults.

Association of Communities Against Abuse (ACAA):
A great story...
In 1987, a number of individuals in Stettler and surrounding area identified the need to raise community awareness of childhood sexual abuse. Concerns arose from the growing number of cases that were identified in the community. At that time, treatment for child sexual abuse survivors was only available in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary.
Community members got together and reached out to other communities in East Central Alberta with similar issues and in August 1988 formed the Association of Communities Against Abuse. By 1990, the Association was providing therapeutic services to children and adults who had been affected by childhood sexual abuse. The agency grew to develop preventive education programs for schools, hospitals, other professionals and the general public.
In June 2014, Judilonne Beebe, Executive Director invited the original Board members to the ACAA AGM to show them what their vision has become and to show all of the great work that is being done locally and provincially to address sexual violence.
Judionne commented that "ACAA had a great meeting and all past and present Board members were thrilled to see where we are in our journey of creating safe, healthy, well-functioning children, families and communities through preventive education and treatment."
