A Letter From The President

June 30, 2014                       Volume 2 No. 33
Nigeria ready to host Africa DNS forum and AfIGF 2014

All is now set to ensure successful hosting of the Africa Domain Name System (DNS) forum 2014 and the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) 2014, at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja under the auspices of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) and with the support of several relevant government agencies and multi-stakeholders.

Precisely, the Africa DNS Forum has been slated to hold at the Nicon Luxury, Abuja from July 7th to 9th 2014, under the community of practice for the Domain Name industry on the continent, the local host being your dear NIRA with the partnership of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Africa Top Level Domain (AfTLD) organization and Internet Society African Bureau. The Annual General Meeting of AFTLD will also hold on the 9th  of July 2014.

The event seeks to build a community of best practices that will strengthen the Domain Name Industry on the African Continent and I would still ask those who would like to attend to register for the forum.

On the other hand, the third African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) 2014  will hold back to back with the DNS Forum 2014 at the same venue: Nicon Luxury, Abuja from July 10th to 12th 2014, under the aegis of United Nations Economic Community for Africa  (UNECA) and Africa Union Commission (AUC) with the Local Multistakeholders Advisory Group (LMAG) comprising  of the Ministry of Communication Technology (MCT), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), DigitalSENSE Africa (DSA), Internet Society (ISOC) Nigeria, Rita Talabi Foundation, Creative Technology for Development Initiative (CTDI) and Global Network for Cybersecurity (GNC).

The 3rd AfIGF will be chaired by the Honourable Minister of Communications Technology, Dr.  Mrs. Omobola Johnson, even some African ICT Minister are invited to attend. We are hosting the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) based on its secretariat model, with the support of the United Nations Department of Economic Affairs (UNDESA), African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) secretariat located within the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), in addition to the full support of the African Union Commission (AUC).

AfIGF, therefore, proposes to discuss critical issues of relevance and concern to the continent as part of a global 10-year review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+10), as well as make recommendations for consideration and adoption by African governments and other stakeholders.

Do recall that the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is one of the major outcomes of the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society to build all-inclusive internet.  The African internet governance space was very active in the lead up to WSIS in 2005 and became even more so after the summit.

In 2012, Egypt hosted the first AfIGF from 2th to 4th October and Kenya equally hosted the second AfIGF from 23th to 26th September 2013.
The Nigerian Internet stakeholders should engage in the debate and discourse in internet governance space, come with us to Abuja and be engaged.

Yours Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Nma Uduma
NIRA President

The ICANN 50 public meeting held in London from June 22th to 26th 2014 ended at the weekend with landmark active participation in excess of 3,343 people from across the globe.

Confirming this, ICANN president and chief executive officer, Mr. Fadi Chehade noted that 3,343 participants registered on site at the Hilton Metropole venue of the fifty public meeting.

He lauded the development, saying it’s great for advancement of the multi-stakeholder model and its inclusivity.

He stressed that ICANN 50 is a milestone meeting for many reasons, “not the least of which is the remarkable affirmations of the multi-stakeholder model it has brought and participation of 3,343, ...."

He equally commended the Chinese government's adoption of the Domain Name System Security (DNSSEC) deployment and the expansion of the Internet Protocol (IPv6) protocol, which would ensure the expansion of the continued global expansion of the Internet. Read more
IANA transition: ISOC searches for stewards

T
he Internet Society (ISOC) is seeking nominations for representatives into its Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (STCG) of National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

ISOC recalls that on 14 March, 2014, the United States government through its National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) disclosed intent to transition stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions to the global multi-stakeholder community.

To this extent, NTIA asked the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), as the IANA functions contractor and global coordinator for the Domain Name System (DNS), to convene a multi-stakeholder process to develop a proposal for the transition.
