2014 is a historic year on Prince Edward Island: a year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, and the conversation that led to the formation of Canada.

A Bold Vision is bringing together 23 women leaders from across Canada to host a Charlottetown conference for the 21st century in Brudenell, PEI this September.

NOW, we want to hear from PEI Youth. What do you want for Canada’s future? Tell us through art, writing, dance, song, theater, or video. Anything imaginable goes! Share your vision for Canada’s future and WIN THE CHANCE TO MEET THE VISIONARY OF YOUR CHOICE. Will you meet a Rocket Scientist? A Poet Laureate? Canada’s first female Prime Minister?

4) Book Launch - July 13

Saltwater Road ~ Tales of Travel on the Northumberland Strait, Marian Bruce

You’re Invited...

Northumberland Ferries and the Wood Islands and Area Development Corporation invite you to join them for the launch of Saltwater Road, the not-so-tall tale of the unsung heroes and other characters behind the beginnings of our ferry system. Don’t miss a book-signing with author Marian Bruce, storytelling, refreshments and local music at the Plough the Waves Centre in Wood Islands on Sunday, July 13, from 2:00–5:00 p.m.

5) Shedding the Shadows

An open call to photographers and writers
PEI Family Violence Prevention Services (PEI FVPS) has launched an open call to photographers and writers to participate in a new fundraising project, Safe Today/Strong Tomorrow, a collection of images, poetry and prose that will showcase an uplifting look at healthy relationships and the beauty and strength of individuals who have experienced family violence. From now until August 31, applicants are invited to submit a work they feel is aligned with the themes of the book. All proceeds from the sales of the book will help offset the expenses associated with the programming of PEI Family Violence Prevention Services including emergency shelter, community outreach services, second and third stage housing, youth programming and more.

A volunteer committee of artists, art enthusiasts, writers and editors will help curate this project. The deadline for entries is August 31, 2014. For information or to download the application form visit www.fvps.ca or contact Lindsay at 902-894-3354 ext 222 or lindsay@fvps.ca.

7) Searching for Abegweit: The Island Songs and Stories of Lennie Gallant

June 26, 2014 - August 30, 2014 (Plays selected dates)
7:30 p.m.

Playing at the cabaret theatre, The Mack, is the new musical hybrid, Searching for Abegweit: The Island Songs & Stories of Lennie Gallant. Woven around the music of the distinguished songwriter, this P.E.I. love-letter stars Gallant himself, and presents his folk and pop music, alongside comedic stories, Island legends, visual art from well-known painter Karen Gallant, and lively fiddle and dance to all celebrate Canada’s cradle on the waves. Directed by the Festival’s associate artistic director, Wade Lynch, this colourful spectacle will offer Lennie Gallant favourites such as ‘Peter’s Dream’ and ‘Island Clay’ along with new Island-themed songs from Gallant’s forthcoming tenth album, Abegweit.

8) Conference announcement: Canadian Women as Public Intellectuals

We are writing to inform you of a ground-breaking national conference taking place this fall.

Please circulate this information widely! For more information and to register, check out our website at discoursedynamics.ca

WHAT: Discourse & Dynamics: Canadian Women as Public Intellectuals
WHERE: Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick
WHEN:  16-18 October 2014
WHO: Discussion panels with Margaret Atwood, Janice Stein, Charlotte Gray, Jessica Danforth, Natalie Panek, Rita Deverell, Nicole Brossard, Silla Watt-Cloutier, Antonia Maioni, Dionne Brand, Smaro Kamboureli, Pamela Palmater, Kady O’Malley, Judy Rebick, Lori Turnbull, Shari Graydon, and OTHERS.

Plus:
“The Walrus Talks: The Art of Conversation”
Scholarly work representing 18 different Canadian universities presenting fresh insights and research on this topic.

WHY: If we are to hope for an inclusive and expansive intellectual society in Canada, one engaged in constructive and open dialogue, we must broaden and enliven public conversations.

Canadian women contribute to civic discourse in myriad and vital ways. But when shapers of opinion are named, few women make the list.  Despite considerable influence and serious work, women are adjuncts in discussions about public life.

Discourse & Dynamics: Canadian Women as Public Intellectuals will confront the persistent under-representation of women as public intellectuals.  This conference, welcoming participants from across the country, addresses their significant contributions - past, present, and future – in field as diverse as literature, business, politics, media, education, and social justice.

Contact the conference organizers via our website discoursedynamics.ca, or by email at discoursedynamics@mta.ca
