With the feast of Saint Dominic exactly one month away, it is good to consider the heritage he left us both in his living and in his dying. The gospel for today shows in high relief the many ways Dominic imitated the Lord, working to gather the harvest as well as to increase the laborers for the harvest.

Like Jesus, Dominic went to the towns and villages teaching all who would listen, preaching the Gospel, and healing those afflicted in body, mind, and spirit. Like Jesus, Dominic’s heart was moved with pity for those who were troubled and abandoned. Like Jesus, Dominic wept as he saw souls lost and wandering, saying “What will become of sinners?” He preached with great enthusiasm and prayed with deep fervor, interceding for each and all with sighs, genuflections, prostrations, and tears.

As he lay dying, Saint Dominic promised the brethren, whom he had sent out two by two to gather the harvest, that he would do more good for them after his death. In death, Dominic continues to ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for the harvest.

Opportunities for imitating Jesus in the footsteps of Saint Dominic abound. Perhaps today we will encounter one who longs to hear the Word spoken in charity or one who feels abandoned and simply needs a companion? Maybe today is the day to commit to serious intercessory prayer for those for whom our hearts weep because they do not know the freedom of living as sons and daughters of God. Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send disciples to tell all with whom they live and work the joys of the Kingdom of God now and in eternity.

Saint Dominic, most zealous for the salvation of souls, pray for us!
Note: Mark your calendar. One month from today, August 8, is the feast of Saint Dominic. The Novena to Saint Dominic begins on July 30. Below is a link to Novena prayers for each day.
