Dear Friend of Makom,
Please join Makom and the Kiever to usher in Tish`ah be-Av, the ninth day of the lunar month of Av, this coming Monday with a meaningful, multifaceted, evening program. This date marks the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem and other tragedies in Jewish history. It is traditionally observed with fasting, refraining from wearing leather, and other mourning customs. (For more background, see here.)
Curious about the flashlight sit-in? Check out the program details below.
We hope you’ll join us,
Aaron & the Makom Leadership Team (Andrea, Felicia, Louise, Miriam, and Ruth)
TISH`AH BE-AV Evening Service, Eikhah, Singing, Learning & Food Drive
This Monday, Aug. 4
@ The Kiever Synagogue – 25 Bellevue Ave.
8:15pm – doors open
8:30 sharp – services start
approx. 10:30 – program ends
We’ll pray the brief evening service and listen to the Biblical book of Eikhah (Lamentations), hauntingly chanted by a number of community members. As signs of mourning, it is customary to sit on the floor of the synagogue with the lights dimmed, so please BRING A FLASHLIGHT. We’ll also sing some songs, kinnot (elegies), and niggunim (wordless melodies).
We’ll then learn and discuss Jewish sources on the multiple meanings of fasting. Texts will be provided in the original Hebrew and English translation and will be accessible to all. Our study session is generously sponsored by Anita Shir-Jacob’s family in honour of her 70th birthday.
Please BRING ONE OR MORE FOOD ITEMS for the St. Stephen’s Community House Corner Drop-In kitchen, in keeping with the spirit of Isaiah 58:6-7—“This is the fast I desire... It is to share your bread with the hungry.” Fresh vegetables, grains, and canned or boxed foods are all welcome.
FYI, the fast begins Monday at sunset, 8:36pm, and ends Tuesday at nightfall, 9:24pm.
There will be a low partition between women's and men’s seating for the evening service, which will be removed for Eikhah and the rest of the evening’s program.
Friday Night MUSICAL SERVICES Jam & Potluck Kosher Kiddush
Next Friday, Aug 8
7pm doors open, 7:15 services start
@ The Kiever Synagogue – 25 Bellevue Ave
Wind down from the week and welcome Shabbat with soulful, song-filled, musical services, in which everyone can participate.
Bring an acoustic instrument if you play one to accompany and elevate our Kabbalat Shabbat prayers.
Please bring a certified kosher food or drink to share for a light kiddush (snacking & schmoozing).
We need a minyan of 10 women + 10 men to start the ma`ariv service, so please try to come on time. Both women and men lead services and there is a low partition between women’s and men’s seating; children are welcome on both sides.
We’ll use instruments during Kabbalat Shabbat until the final stanza of Lekha Dodi, at which point we’ll stow the instruments and bring in Shabbat a cappella before sunset.
