NERACOOS News: July 2014
Sustaining Members Event

NERACOOS sustaining members were invited to attend an event on May 28th in Portsmouth, NH. The morning of the event greeted us with 40 degree temperatures, howling winds and periodic rain showers. Despite the weather, over 20 committed and brave individuals joined us to learn about NERACOOS and ocean acidification in the Northeast. Delegation staff from the offices of Senator King (ME), Senator Collins (ME), Senator Shaheen (NH), Representative Shea-Porter (NH), and Representative Pingree (ME), joined NERACOOS members, board and staff on board the R/V Gulf Challenger. Thank you to Dr. Joe Salisbury and his team at UNH for a great day! To learn more about becoming a member click here.

NERACOOS Awarded New Hurricane Sandy Funds

We are pleased to announce that NERACOOS, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and Axiom Consulting and Design have been awarded $520K in new federal funding through the Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resiliency Competitive Grants Program. These funds will be used to increase the accessibility and usability of information needed for understanding the effects of Hurricane Sandy and for developing tools to improve preparedness and response for future coastal storm events. This program received more than 375 applications and NERACOOS was one of the 54 projects selected for funding.
Improving our Understanding of Ocean Acidification

Last summer NERACOOS was instrumental in establishing the Northeast Coastal Acidification Network (NECAN). This regional partnership is tasked with coordinating ocean acidification engagement, research, and modeling endeavors. Since the launch of NECAN last year many scientists, managers and policy makers have been aggressively working to learn more about ocean acidification in the Northeast. For example, the State of Maine has set up a groundbreaking Commission and introduced laws to better understand the effects of Ocean Acidification. Save the Date for the 2014 NEOSEC Ocean Literacy Summit

The 5th biennial NEOSEC Ocean Literacy Summit will be held Thursday and Friday November 6th and 7th in Woods Hole, MA. The Summit is being hosted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and will feature keynote speaker Deborah Cramer. This year's theme will be Ocean Literacy Principle #6, the humans and the ocean are inextricably interconnected.

Join us on the Cape for another two days of exploring the connections between ocean science and education, with workshops and speakers bringing the latest in research and practice! This year's Summit will also include opportunities to explore Woods Hole laboratories and sites. A sampling of field trips include:
·  Science Cruise with Zephyr Education Foundation
·  WHOI Dock Tour and Ocean Science Exhibit Center
·  MBL Marine Resources Center
·  Walking tour of Woods Hole maritime history

Registration for this year's Summit will open in late August at www.neosec.org
Heading to the Coast? Check NERACOOS First

With summer in full swing, many people are heading out to enjoy and work on New England's coastal and ocean waters. Check out the NERACOOS tools listed below to access real-time observations and forecasts of ocean conditions.

Real-time ocean and weather conditions
Our real-time data portal is updated hourly and provides access to the latest ocean and weather observations from stations throughout the Northeast.

Wind and wave forecast
This tool delivers an easy-to–use forecast of winds and waves conditions from around the region.

Wave forecast
The wave forecast delivers color-coded maps of forecasted wave heights, period and direction for the region. You can also view an animation of the 24 hour forecast of wave conditions.

Ocean forecasts
The ocean forecasts page connects you to the Northeast Coastal Ocean Forecast System, which provides graphical forecasts of winds, water temperature, salinity, currents and more.

How many Geocaches can you find?

The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment is celebrating their 25th year anniversary with the release of the Gulf of Maine GeoTour. This 25 cache tour of the Gulf of Maine was created to help you explore the natural, historic, cultural and economic beauty of the region. The treasure, a limited edition Gulf of Maine Council 25th Anniversary Geocoin, is available to participants who collect enough points and send in their responses for verification (conditions may apply, coins available only to the first 100 verified submissions). For more information and to participate in the Gulf of Maine Council GeoTour, click here.
USGS Releases Coastal Change Hazard Portal

Just in time for Hurricane Season 2014, USGS has released its Coastal Change Hazard Portal. This tool gives you access to coastal hazards information along America's coasts. Pick your favorite beach location, type in the name, zoom in, and explore historic shoreline changes, forecasts related to long-term change, the Coastal Vulnerability Index, and more. It was developed with “agile software,” so you can overlay other geographic information easily without the need for GIS programs. Watch the video tutorial to get started.
