The End Of The Age Pyramid
Throughout human history, plotting populations by age group has yielded a pyramid. Across societies, the young (the base) exceeded the old (the tip).

But in recent decades, these pyramids have been morphing into rectangles and other previously unseen shapes. Just look at how the age breakdown of the U.S. population is expected to change between 1950 and 2060. This highlights the need to tackle the degenerative diseases caused by aging. Read more

How To Live For ever

Jeanne Calment (pictured), who lived for 122 years and 164 days (longer than any other person), said the secret to her longevity was a diet rich in olive oil, port wine and chocolate. She smoked until the age of 117.

There are a number of biological components involved in the process of aging. These cause the body to slowly degrade at the cellular level. Old age is also a leading risk factor for many common illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease. Tackling aging, therefore, is seen as a way to combat many diseases at once. Read more
Dr. Bill Andrews Talks About ‘How Telomere Research Is Turning Back The Aging Clock’

Liz Parrish of BioTrove podcasts interviews Dr. Bill Andrews, President and CEO of Sierra Sciences, to discuss the impact of telomeres on aging and regenerative medicine.  Dr. Andrews has spent two decades unlocking the molecular mechanisms of aging. His mission: to extend the human lifespan to 150 years -- or die trying.  Listen to the discussion about telomeres, telomerase, how the Hayflick limit might affect your cellular senescence and more at the Biotrove Podcast
Body Parts On A Chip

It's relatively easy to imagine a new medicine, a better cure for some disease. The hard part, though, is testing it, and that can delay promising new cures for years. In this well-explained talk, Geraldine Hamilton shows how her lab creates organs and body parts on a chip, simple structures with all the pieces essential to testing new medications even custom cures for one specific person. Living To 120 And Beyond: Americans’ Views On Aging, Medical Advances And Radical Life Extension

A majority of Americans do not look happily on the prospect of living markedly longer lives. They see peril as well as promise in biomedical advances, and more think it would be a bad thing than a good thing for society if people lived decades longer than is possible today, according to a 2013 survey by the Pew Research Center.

Asked whether they, personally, would choose to undergo medical treatments to slow the aging process and live to be 120 or more, a slight majority of U.S. adults (56%) said “no.” But roughly two-thirds (68%) think that most other people would. Read more
Caloric Restriction And The Aging Process: A Critique

An excellent review published in the peer-reviewed journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine highlights the issues with calorie restriction research. The researchers highlight that calorie restriction does not prolong lifespan across all species; this is especially true among mammals. Additionally, the benefits attributed to calorie restriction is mainly an artifact of overfed laboratory animals. Read more
