The Montessori Way to Help People With Dementia


Have You Tried an Activity "Blitz"?

Over the past few months we've had great success (and, I must say, a lot of fun) doing what I call an Activity "Blitz" at different facilities.

The concept is to engage four to six residents in individual (related) activities at the same time without requiring individual, constant supervision for each. One staff member and one volunteer can generally handle up to six residents. Contact us if you'd like to talk about setting up an Activity Blitz at your facility. There is no charge or obligation.

Choosing an Appropriate Activity

Choosing an appropriate activity for a person with dementia is not easy. The activity not only has to be of interest to them, the person must also be able to do it successfully. It is important for their self-esteem that they are able to participate in the activity and experience a sense of accomplishment. An Easy-to-Present Activity for Each Unit

Here's an idea for a way to provide each unit with an easy and fun activity that can be done with minimal supervision.

Take one Aquapaint sheet from each of your Aquapaint books. Put each sheet in a sheet protector, then put them into a small binder or duotang in groups of four (one from each Aquapaint book). Put a label on the outside of the binder identifying the sheets inside, as well as handling instructions for the sheets. Here are two PDF's that you can print and tape to the front of the binder...
