Spotlight on trends

Through the CAA’s ongoing advocacy work and via attendance at industry meetings we share a wide range of business-related information with our colleagues and public sector owners. This cross-pollination helps us to spot trends, or at least to be made aware of movement within the design and construction industry that may impact the way our member firms do business.

Construction cost escalations on the horizon

Advocacy Update

Highlights of the work we have been doing on behalf of our membership over the past few months include:
  • Policy discussions with Alberta Infrastructure
  • Reviewing honoraria for design-build school bundle
  • Addressing unsanctioned design competitions
  • Meeting with AHS re: their Prime Consultant Agreement
  • Meetings with MacEwan University and the City of Edmonton re: procurement
  • Alberta Municipal Affairs regarding information collected during procurement
  • Free tools and RFP review service offered to a municipality planning their new aquatic facility

Feature committee
Institutional Infrastructure Partners Committee (IIPC) 

Kees Cusveller (ACA) chairs this industry consultation committee that meets 2-3 times per year. Members include four provincial industry associations and five client organizations.

The purpose of IIPC is to provide a forum for conducting ongoing dialogue between provincial representatives of Alberta’s construction industry and government to:
  • Enhance information sharing;
  • Identify and resolve common issues; and
  • Strengthen relationships.

Retirement

Brian Soutar, Executive Director of Procurement for Alberta Infrastructure recently retired from a remarkable 41 years in the business After a rewarding and varied career in both the private and pubic sector, Brian has decided to step away from full-time employment.

Right from the CAA's inception, Brian was a champion of our organization and supported us as we worked to understand and respect one another's perspective and collaborate on issues. We thank Brian for his support and wish him and his family all the best in the next chapter!

Merger

Two CAA member firms have merged!  Zeidler Partnership Architects' Calgary office has merged with BKDI Architects. Now called Zeidler BKDI Architects, this new partnership represents a combination of a shared culture and complementary practice strengths and is a natural transition from Zeidler and BKDI's 15-year history of joint collaboration as a registered collaborative firm working in Alberta.
