Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between two and three years of age. Learn More
Disaster, Crisis Management and Innovation in a Chilean Mine

Thirty-three men are trapped in a mine 2,400 feet below solid rock. Ages range from 19 to 62. Known medical conditions in some of the miners are Type 2 diabetes, silicosis, hypertension, coronary disease and COPD. NASA was consulted and involved in the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners. In this session, Dr. Polk, former chief, Space Medicine, NASA Johnson Space Center, goes over the many facets of physiology and emergency and disaster medicine that were considered and used to affect one of the most audacious rescues in history. The session reviews the implications for blast over pressure on the human body, the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of refeeding syndrome, the implications of orthostatic hypotension and the nuances and implications of rescue and cage design. Chronic Non-Malignant Pain

2.0 hours of AOA Category 1-A – $20
This course reviews the current evidence-based standards for chronic pain evaluation, management and documentation. Health care providers should be able to compare their current practices with these recommendations and make any changes as they see necessary to improve their management of this important and prevalent condition. DMU achieves AOA reaccreditation with commendation for continuing medical education

Des Moines University earned a perfect score for its continuing medical education activities for physicians from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Vanessa Ross, CMP, CCMEP, DMU’s director of continuing medical education, reported that at its March 29 meeting, the AOA Council on CME issued a perfect 100-point score for the University’s submission for CME reaccreditation. As a result, DMU is recognized by the AOA as a Category 1 CME sponsor with a three-year Level 3 accreditation “with commendation.” To achieve Level 3, an institution’s CME activities must include an outcomes measurement assessing participant’s competence, performance and/or patient outcomes.
This recognition was achieved by only 24 percent of CME submissions to the AOA during the most recent review period.
“Des Moines University has become a leader in providing quality continuing education to the health care community in Iowa. This accreditation validates DMU’s commitment to support the life-long clinical, research, and professional development needs of our stakeholders,” Ross said. “Health care providers who participate in DMU CME activities can be confident they will benefit professionally, as will their patients and organizations.”
In addition to its AOA accreditation, the DMU CME/CEU program is accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, the Iowa Board of Nursing, the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education through the Iowa Medical Society, and the Board of Certification Inc. for certified athletic trainers.  Council on Podiatric Medical Education – Des Moines University’s Continuing Medical Education department is pleased to announce continued approval as a sponsor of continuing education in podiatric medicine. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education approved the 2013 annual report submitted in January 2014. Look for events on campus providing CPME credit! For more information, visit the CME website.
American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) – DMU has been approved as a continued provider for AAPA Category 1 CME credit to eligible physician assistant preceptors. This approval is valid from August 1, 2014 – May 8, 2015. |

 On April 12, Des Moines University, OneIowa Education Fund and the LGBT Health and Wellness Initiative hosted the 2014 LGBT Health and Wellness Conference. Guests included LGBT community members, providers and educators, and representatives from health care facilities, community-based organizations, institutions of higher education and faith-based organizations. Attendees spent the day networking with community members from across that state to connect, sharing best practices and developing relationships for partnership and collaboration.  The fifth annual Des Moines University Foot and Ankle Surgery Symposium on April 25-26 brought to campus more than 190 attendees and exhibitors from the Midwest region. They spent the two days deepening their understanding of core topics related to restorative techniques of foot and ankle surgery, evaluating surgical and non-surgical treatments using the latest evidence-based research, and post-surgical rehabilitation and physical therapy modalities.  The Des Moines University Office of Research hosted Dr. John Robertson for a second grant writing workshop on June 20, 2014. Attended by DMU faculty and staff, Write Winning Grant Proposals aimed to help both basic scientists and clinical investigators convey their ideas convincingly to increase the favorable review and funding of proposals. In addressing the practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the proposal-writing process, the workshop offered concrete insight and strategies for success. Read more
 On July 14-15, DMU welcomed 30 physical therapy clinical instructors to campus for an APTA Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing Program. Using a case-based and interactive approach to education, the program provided participants with the essential knowledge and skills to more effectively teach and mentor students in the context of a doctoring profession. Through the program’s unique philosophy and design, best outcomes were achieved for student learning by concurrently advancing concepts of clinical teaching and practice.
 On Friday, July 18, more than 80 people gathered to celebrate the conclusion of Des Moines University’s 2014 Mentored Student Research Program. Participants focused on projects ranging from microbiology and biochemistry to physical therapy and public health, and everything else around and in-between. As a result of their eight weeks of hard work and dedication, the closing program featured 27 student poster presentations, as well as four student keynote speakers to present their research.
