"Nothing useless can be truly beautiful"
William Morris

This weekend, join us at the Walthamstow Garden Party, a free two-day festival for everybody in Lloyd Park – formerly the garden of Waltham Forest's most famous son, William Morris.

Alongside a world-class line up of music and theatre programmed by the Barbican, sports and family activities, and delicious food from the Real Food Festival, Create explores the legacy of the revolutionary Victorian craftsman through a series of art commissions and craft activities.

Useful and Beautiful Craft Marquee
12-5pm Sat & Sun, front lawns of William Morris Gallery
Inspired by Morris' love of all things handmade - try making a wooden hobby-horse with Blackhorse Workshop; print your own apron with Inky Cuttlefish; make a silver ring with Made by Ore (limited spaces, workshops begin at 12.30 and 3pm); or hone your knitting and crochet skills with Abstract.

Close by on the lawns, the ELMO bus brings back the popular Studio Dentaku workshop, where participants can make instruments from flowers, vegetables and other conductive objects.

Workshops for younger visitors include den-making with Scribble and Smudge and a giant patchwork installation from Significant Seams, while the E17 Designers Market will showcase the work of local makers.

Escape to Artillery Island
12-5pm Sat & Sun Summer Appetite Festival
8.30pm Saturday Iftar – break of fast with dates and prayer
Cross over the moat and you will find Artillery Island, home to the Summer Appetite Festival - blending local produce and edible treats with a programme of poetry, comedy, songs and demonstrations curated by Artillery. At sun-down the area will be transformed into a peaceful space for prayer and Iftar, all welcome.

E17 Art Trail Commission: Zarah Hussein
9pm Saturday Magic Carpet – projection, rear facade of William Morris Gallery

On Saturday evening, artist Zarah Hussein's Magic Carpet animated projection will fleetingly carpet the external facade of the William Morris Gallery at sunset celebrating Chaand Raat, the 'night of the moon' on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, or end of Ramadan. Morris was fascinated by the patterns, colours and production of Persian and eastern carpets and this site-specific installation will blend an ancient art with cutting-edge new technology developed by Guildhall School of Music and Drama to a spectacular effect. Not to be missed!
