Business on the destination’s agenda

Bournemouth has traditionally been one of the UK’s major conference destinations, offering extensive bed-stock, significant delegate capacity and boasting two acclaimed universities. But while the town has hosted numerous high-profile conferences in the past, this sector has been in decline in recent years.

The NCTA has compiled a destination level strategy to address this.

Get a piece of the Action!

Coastal destinations have huge potential for the Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition (MICE) sector, offering the obvious appeal of fresh sea air but also a relaxed resort atmosphere with plenty of leisure facilities away from the conference hall. There are considerable opportunities for small and medium-sized accommodation providers to tap into the MICE market.  Business travellers are less seasonal, and spend more, so make ideal guests!

To help boost your business, the NCTA has produced a Business Sector guide, offering practical advice – do you, for example, offer fast, free Wi-Fi? Do your guest rooms provide adequate desk space, good lighting and an iron?

Boost your business

If you’d like to find out how your business could benefit from the MICE sector, we provide support.  We have an Action Team of experts who can assess your business on a one-to-one basis, identify target markets and provide advice on how to implement specific recommendations from NCTA research. This could include providing loyalty schemes or discounts to encourage them to return, perhaps with family, offering a bespoke meeting package tailored to their needs or advice on organising events, and much more.

Open year round!

Attracting year-round business is a challenge for almost all coastal resorts. The NCTA can now offer new research providing fresh insights and advice on targeting different markets.  Best performing businesses (and destinations) are those who have weather-proofed or invested in all-weather attractions. But domestic short breaks are increasing, with more being taken in shoulder months than any other time.

Train to be the best!

The next Welcome Bournemouth Host, half day course, takes place on 1st September.  It’s the natural follow-on to the Bournemouth Ambassador, providing more in-depth customer service training alongside product knowledge.

We’ve also introduced a new Enjoy Discovering Wine course for all front-line staff in the hospitality sector, the one day course provides participants with a WSET Level 1 Award. Courses will take place in central Bournemouth, with a choice of different dates in September.

Passport to success

Nothing beats a word-of-mouth recommendation for boosting business, so the NCTA is launching a ‘passport’ for local attractions in and around Bournemouth for all accommodation staff. The booklet will offer a host of cut-price offers, ranging from 50 per cent discounts in water sports academies, to two-for-one entry and slashed rates for sports lessons and equipment. The passport will be perfect for staff new to the town or those in need of a refresher fam visit.
