Town of Central honors Rhodes’ memory with proclamation

The town of Central proclaimed Oct. 8 as the Marla Rhodes Annual Fire Prevention and Public Service Day. Marla Rhodes graduated from SWU in 1998 with a degree in elementary education. She also received her master’s degree in education from SWU in 2006. Rhodes was employed by the university when she received her first degree. Rhodes, who was an active promoter of fire prevention at Central Elementary School and Clemson Elementary School, died unexpectedly this year. The day will be observed in the middle of Fire Prevention Week, which takes place Oct. 5-11

Walgreens DC visit

Several SWU employees toured the Walgreens Anderson Distribution Center July 25. During the tour, the group met and spoke with distribution center employees and observed how the center and its equipment is designed around Walgreens' commitment to employing a large percentage of disabled workers. The distribution center, which has gained international attention from the corporate world and the news media, is a model of how the disabled are successfully integrated into a team that benefits both the company and its employees. SWU North Augusta hosts training

The North Augusta learning center hosted training this past week for Walmart employees as they prepare for work in a new store being constructed in North Augusta. Also at the learning center for training was Austin Industrial. According to Jason Norton, regional director-North Augusta, Austin Industrial comes to the learning center every six months to conduct training in SWU’s classroom facilities. 
University Singers, a mixed ensemble, exalts Christ through a balance of contemporary Christian and traditional gospel music. Their new schedule is now online, and they have three CD’s available for purchase. Contact Gail Kerstetter at gkerstetter@swu.edu for details.

Congratulations!

Adam and Jennie Fairchild Ladd welcomed a new son, Isaiah Thomas Ladd, into the world July 18 at 2:48 a.m. He’s 211/2 inches long and weighs 8 lbs. 10 oz. Adam is custodial manager and a 2011 graduate; Jennie is a 2008 graduate.
Allen Powell, a December 2013 MBA graduate, is currently regional director of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He feels his SWU degree will be put to good use as he transitions into his new duties.

O'Callaghan wraps up season in professional baseball

Former Southern Wesleyan baseball player Tim O’Callaghan recently wrapped up his first season of professional baseball in the Pecos League, part of independent minor league baseball. Read more>>

Music scholarships presented

Ariail Lankford, an Easley High School graduate, is the latest recipient of a music scholarship from SWU's department of music. She will be participating in the university's performing groups, beginning with the 2014-'15 academic year: Click here for a complete list of music ensemble scholarship recipients.

New look

Physical Plant employees have been busy this summer renovating the interiors of one of the blocks of apartments on the Central campus. Here's a glimpse of one of the apartments, where new flooring and light fixtures have been installed.
